The three ex-players of the Indian team were engaged in a heated discussion regarding MS Dhoni’s finishing skills and his future role in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

MS Dhoni is playing as a proper finisher from the last few seasons as he bats way down in the batting order.

Sanjay Bangar raises concerns on MS Dhoni’s position

Sanjay Bangar raised concerns about CSK’s future in the next IPL as they have to make some changes in the batting order. CSK are having their worst season in IPL 2025.

MS Dhoni only came on the pitch to play just two or three overs, and Bangar stated that Dhoni can only come in to finish the innings, and CSK used Ravindra Jadeja to bat at no. 4.

Former CSK player Suresh Raina did not agree with Bangar’s statement as CSK management forcibly sent Jadeja to 4 because of the consistent failure of the top order.

Bangar also said that Dhoni cannot bat for five or six overs because of his fitness. That's the reason why Jadeja bats top of the order.

“MS Dhoni is someone who has a designated position, but for that, the batters around him have had to adjust and accommodate a lot. Because MS Dhoni cannot run that much, they have promoted Ravindra Jadeja in the batting order. Because Dhoni is unable to bat for five or six overs because of his fitness, even Shivam Dube is coming down the order now,” Sanjay Bangar stated on Star Sports.

Suresh Raina’s strong reply

Suresh Raina issued a strong statement to Bangar that Jadeja is batting at no. 4 because of the top order failure, not because of Dhoni’s fitness.

"Jadeja is batting at no. 4 because Conway and Rachin had not scored runs at all, and not because Dhoni cannot run. Pathirana is bowling wide after wide, still he us diving to his left, diving to his right. Are you saying MS Dhoni is not a good finisher?” Raina’s reply.

After Raina’s statement, Bangar assured that he is not questioning the abilities of Dhoni’s finishing skills.

Aakash Chopra joins the argument

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra also joined the debate and suggested Dhoni can also come as an impact player. Chopra also raised a question whether any wicket-keeper in any T20 league is coming at the no. 8 or below position in the batting order.

“Nowadays, he can come as an impact player also. Is there any wicket-keeper batter in any league in the world who is playing at no. 8 or 9?” Chopra stated.

Dhoni hasn’t announced anything about his future in the IPL. Dhoni played more than 20 balls only once in this IPL season, which shows his involvement in the CSK’s batting order.
