Adam Gilchrist has stunned the cricket world with his explosive assessment of who stays and who goes in the Chennai Super Kings camp amid their horrific run in the ongoing IPL 2025. With CSK languishing far from their golden standards, Gilchrist said that the five-time champions must face a harsh reality that the MS Dhoni era is finally over.
Amidst their poor campaign, Gilchrist urged the Chennai Super Kings to shift gears and embrace a full-blown rebuild for the next season. The Aussie great labeled Ruturaj Gaikwad as the cornerstone of CSK’s next era, but he doesn’t see MS Dhoni turning for the team in the IPL 2026.
Ruturaj Gaikwad is the future: Adam Gilchrist names the players CSK should retain for next IPL
Legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batter noted that Gaikwad remains a clear pick for the CSK for the future. With his calm leadership and consistent performances, he is a key player to build the team around, according to the cricket pundit.
Adam Gilchrist said on Cricbuzz, “So CSK hasn't had the year they would have hoped for. It's been a difficult one, and now their decision is, do they start to think about next year? Can they resurrect and rebuild? So, who do they retain? Who do they let go? I'm going to start with the injured captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad. Yeah, I'm keeping him, no doubt about it. He's a foundation player. He's a marquee player. You've got to hold on to him.”
MS Dhoni doesn't need to be there next year: Adam Gilchrist
Speaking about Dhoni’s future, the Australian legend mentioned that the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has done it all in the game, and it might be time for the team to look ahead to their iconic player. He feels CSK’s focus should now shift to shaping the next era for the side.
Gilchrist further added, “Then the big one, MS Dhoni. He has nothing more to prove to anyone in the game. He's achieved it all. MS, well, he'll know what he wants to do, but I'm saying for the future, it's going to cost me this, I know, but perhaps he doesn't need to be there next year. I love you, Ms.. You are a champion, an icon.”

Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, and Ravindra to lead CSK's next era
Meanwhile, Adam Gilchrist backed young talents like Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Rachin Ravindra to carry the torch forward. He dubbed “exciting and talented” Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis as the “future of the CSK.” He also wants the franchise to retain Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Shivam Dube, and even the struggling Vijay Shankar for the next season.
The Aussie great added, “Ravindra Jadeja, what a talent. Yeah, aging, but I still see the rock star as Shane Warren dubbed him way back at the start of this whole beast of a thing that is the IPL. I'm just going to go with him one more time.”
Adam Gilchrist hails Matheesha Pathirana as a "unique" talent
Apart from MS Dhoni, Gilchrist suggested that the CSK need to move on from Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, and Devon Conway. He said, “Chennai spent a lot to get Conway, and they're not playing him. Unfortunately, he's got to go, and that frees up a fair bit of cash at the auction.”
Gilchrist further said that CSK should retain Ravichandran Ashwin to keep that experience around the group. He also backed Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmed, Matheesha Pathirana, Khaleel Ahmed, Nathan Ellis, and Mukesh Chowdhary to be part of the franchise for the next season.
Speaking about Matheesha Pathirana, the former Australian wicketkeeper noted that “he's unique, he's different.”
