Former legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni has once again been offered a formal mentoring role by the BCCI in the Indian national team; however, this time the role seems to be on a broader aspect, covering all the senior and junior teams as well as women's cricket.
As the Gautam Gambhir era continues in Indian cricket ever since his appointment as the Indian head coach after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, new news has made the buzz, which would surely leave the former left-hander baffled.
Ever since Gambhir's appointment, there have been several controversial management decisions made, and hence, it seems the BCCI wants to impose supervision on the actions of the Indian head coach with an additional mentorship role within the Indian setup.
MS Dhoni offered a permanent mentor role by the BCCI
The legendary Indian skipper MS Dhoni has given India several reasons to celebrate over his playing years. The revolutionary captain still holds the record as the only Captain in the World to have won all the ICC white-ball tournaments as the skipper of a team.
As per sources of CricBlogger, it is revealed that the BCCI has offered a mentorship role to the former Indian captain. Such a role was previously offered to the veteran back in 2021 during India's T20 World Cup campaign alongside coach Ravi Shastri.
However, the role seems broader this time, as the BCCI promises Dhoni's involvement across all formats of its teams—including seniors, juniors, and potentially even women’s cricket, since they want his immense experience to be used to impart knowledge to the next generation of cricketers.
Will Dhoni adapt to any role within the Indian team alongside Gautam Gambhir's presence as the Head coach?
As MS Dhoni remains one of India's greatest captains and also one of the best Indian cerebrals in the game, his guidance could be useful to shape the next generation of stars of Indian cricket. With this idea, the BCCI had approached the CSK star. “Dhoni is again offered to mentor Indian cricket,” a BCCI source said.
If such a request holds on to terms for both BCCI and the former veteran, then this would mark Dhoni's first official involvement with the Indian team ever since his retirement back in 2020.
However, the offer to mentor the Indian team remains a far thought for the former Indian great, especially due to the presence of current Indian coach Gautam Gambhir. It is believed by many that Dhoni would not be willing to work alongside his former India teammate.
The reason behind this is the tiff between the two cricketers ever since their initial playing days; hence, Dhoni would not be considering the role anytime soon to avoid any kind of responsibility overlap or any potential friction.
MS Dhoni to remain focused on CSK commitments
Alongside these mentorship roles, MS Dhoni, the 44-year-old who still continues to feature for his franchise team, Chennai Super Kings, in the IPL. He also led them in the IPL 2025, after skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out midway due to a serious injury.
Though there has been no official indication from MS Dhoni himself or even the CSK unit, some believe that the upcoming season would mark MSD's final outing with the franchise, and he would be focused on aiming at winning the 6th title with the team.
