Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth made a brutal statement on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) MS Dhoni's future in the IPL after the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR). The former batter stated that MS Dhoni should retire if he is not able to perform for the Chennai-based team in the tournament.
Chennai Super Kings suffered a tough defeat against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi on Tuesday, May 20. MS Dhoni had a forgettable outing with the bat. The 43-year-old cricketer managed to score just 16 runs off 17 balls, as CSK posted a below-par total of 187/8 in 20 overs on a batting-friendly surface.
You Can’t Expect Too Much from MS Dhoni - Kris Srikkanth
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Kris Srikkanth weighed in on MS Dhoni's recent struggles. Srikkanth said that Dhoni is aging and added that he should consider stepping away rather than continuing without performances.
"Dhoni is also ageing, you can’t expect too much from him. But at the same time, you can’t keep coming and messing it up, if you are not able to do it, say you’re not able to do it and walk away. That’s a call Dhoni can only take. Whether he will continue, if he continues, then in what role: captain, wicket keeper or finisher?" Srikkanth said.
"In all fairness, his reflexes has gone down. His knees might have given up, his fitness, reflex level everything will obviously come down. And moreover, the top order is flopping," he continued.
MS Dhoni Is Struggling to Replicate His Own Game - Kris Srikkanth
The cricketer-turned-commentator said that MS Dhoni's poor form has hurt Chennai Super Kings this season. He pointed out that Dhoni is no longer the dominant force he once was, particularly against spin, where bowlers have managed to contain him with ease.
"The problem with CSK today is that Dhoni is not able to replicate his own game. Spinners are tying him down. Once, he used to hit off spinners 10 rows into the stands. In all fairness, he is struggling," Srikkanth added.
The Super Kings suffered their tenth defeat in 13 matches. They are on the brink of ending the season at the bottom of the IPL standings for the first time in the tournament’s history.
MS Dhoni Has Struggled to Make an Impact with the Bat in IPL 2025
MS Dhoni has found it difficult to make an impact with the bat in IPL 2025. He has batted only in the later stages of the innings due to ongoing knee concerns. Dhoni has scored 196 runs in 13 matches at an average below 25 and a strike rate of 135.17.
The right-handed batter is playing his 18th straight IPL season since the tournament began in 2008, but has not revealed any details about his future plans. He has decided to stay silent on the topic in post-match discussions.
With Dhoni's future in the IPL still uncertain, Chennai Super Kings are set to wrap up their 2025 campaign with a final league match against the top-ranked Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 25 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
