Mohit Sharma reveals the fiery side of MS Dhoni behind his calm demeanor
During his time with the CSK, Mohit witnessed a fierce incident when a relaxed MS Dhoni turned into a passionate motivator. Despite winning a lot of accolades and ICC trophies for India, Dhoni’s drive for perfection is such that he is quick to call out mistakes on the field.
MS Dhoni, who is known for his sharp tongue, has often addressed his bowlers with a force that stunned him. Now, Mohit shared how MS Dhoni's critiques were never personal, saying the legendary captain would unleash his frustration when a bowler lost focus or reacted to crowd noise instead of paying attention to the game.
These incidents were always intense and followed by Dhoni’s guidance, reinforcing his belief that what happens on the field should remain there. The former Indian pacer played under Dhoni’s captaincy for CSK and scalped 69 wickets. Now, Mohit credited his success to Dhoni's relentless drive for excellence.
With each warning and abuse came from Dhoni in passion for a desire to win, and this philosophy has fueled his teams to glory. According to Mohit, those fiery moments with Dhoni only strengthened the bond between the captain and his players.
We've got a lot of abuses from MS Dhoni: Mohit Sharma
The seasoned pacer claimed that he got a lot of abuses and copped a lot of flak from Dhoni during his two IPL stints between 2013 and 2015 and in 2019.
Mohit Sharma on the '2 Sloggers' podcast: “We've got a lot of abuses from him. But he always says, What happens on the field stays there. Later, he will make you understand but never be angry with you. I have heard a lot from him.
Being a fast bowler, you tend to lose focus. Pay attention to what's happening behind you. If he waves at you and you are facing towards some other end. If someone from the public says something you react. Because of things like this, I've copped a lot of flak from him.”
Meanwhile, Mohit shared a memorable incident involving Deepak Chahar that highlights the intense yet affectionate nature of Dhoni's leadership. Back in 2019, during a match in Chennai, Deepak was struggling with his knuckleball, which was either a full toss or mishit, resulting in a boundary.
'Bewakoof tu nahi hai, bewakoof main hu'
Dhoni immediately advised him against using that delivery again, to which Deepak complied. However, after a few balls, he attempted the knuckleball once more, only for it to sail over the batter's head. After the over, Dhoni approached Deepak, placing an arm around his shoulder and speaking to him.
Later, the CSK teammates asked Deepak what had transpired, to which he revealed that Dhoni had shared some choice words like abusing words in frustration, but concluded with a humorous twist as Dhoni said: "Bewakoof tu nahi hai, bewakoof main hu (You're not the fool, I am)."
