MS Dhoni's friend reveals what India needs to do to win ICC T20 World Cup 2024

India cricketer Manoj Tiwary feels that the T20 World Cup will not be an easy assignment for the Indian team. Tiwari reckons India has what it requires to win the tournament but they will have to select the players who are performing well heading into the global T20 event.
India suffered another heartbreak in the ODI World Cup finals as they were defeated by Australia extending India’s hunt for an ICC title to 11 years. India last won an ICC event back in 2013 when MS Dhoni led the team to the Champions Trophy title beating hosts England in the finals. Despite coming close to winning many times, the Men in Blue have failed to end their decade-long trophy drought.
The Men in Blue have another opportunity this year as they will now look to grab the silverware in the T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled to commence on June 1 and will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. the Men in Blue were eliminated from the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup where England thrashed them by 10 wickets.
“It’s gonna be very challenging for India in the upcoming World Cup is what I feel. It’s not going to be easy. However, India has the capacity and ability to win the World Cup. This is provided they persist with the players who want to play in the tournament. Like the preparations should start now and there shouldn’t be too many changes in the team,” Manoj Tiwary said to Arvind Krishnan as quoted by Cricket Keeda Sports.
Manoj Tiwary Wants Indian Players Who Are In Form And Not Big Names
Manoj Tiwary also highlighted how the Men in Blue can learn from their mistakes in the past. The batter said that India will have to pick players that have form behind them rather than going with big names. India has always counted on big names which sometimes leads to in-form players missing out on a spot. However, Manoj Tiwary feels the in-form players should be the first ones to be picked.
“We (India) did very well in the ODI WC in 2023 and were consistent throughout the tournament. We only faltered towards the end. You can say that several ‘external factors’ played in the minds that led to the debacle in the finals…..Which I believe. But yes, learning from your mistakes is what you should do, like learn from the mistakes you made in the 2023 ODI WC and ensure that they don’t repeat it in the 2024 T20 WC.
You’ve got to pick players who are in form, rather than going with the big names, I don’t think that’s gonna help the cause. Whosoever plays well in the tournaments before the WC should be picked, I think, and they should be backed,” Manoj Tiwary added.
The Indian team recently played a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan where they won 3-0 against the visitors. This was their last white-ball series before the start of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2024. However, the players will get valuable match practice in the IPL 2024 which is expected to commence during the third week of March.
India has been drafted in Group A of the ICC T20 World Cup alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, the hosts USA, Canada, and Ireland. The Men in Blue will start their World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland in New York. They will face Pakistan on June 9 in New York where a temporary stadium is expected to be built with a seating capacity of 34,000.
