Former Team India cricketer Yograj Singh has criticized MS Dhoni following the controversy surrounding the viral ‘Hookah’ incident. Yograj, father of Yuvraj Singh, accused Dhoni of maintaining a “guilty silence” on the matter and claimed that several former players were mistreated under his captaincy.
MS Dhoni, who has been away from competitive cricket since the end of IPL 2025, has been in the headlines due to an old video of Irfan Pathan. In the clip, Pathan recalled his exclusion from the national cricket team in 2008 and alleged that the former skipper favored players who “set up hookahs for him.”
It Is Not Only About Irfan Pathan - Yograj Singh on MS Dhoni
Yograj Singh stated that Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, and Harbhajan Singh were unfairly treated under Dhoni’s leadership. Yograj said that the former captain’s refusal to respond is a guilty conscience.
“It is not only about Irfan Pathan. You see Gautam Gambhir speaking about it. Virender Sehwag openly said about it as well. Harbhajan Singh spoke about how he was put out of the team like a fly. You should arrange a jury on why he did what he did. MS Dhoni doesn’t want to answer. One who doesn’t want to answer has a guilty conscience,” Yograj told InsideSport.
Our Cricketers And Team Were Destroyed By Our Captain - Yograj Singh
Yograj Singh also targeted Kapil Dev and Bishan Singh Bedi for the unfair treatment of some players. The former all-rounder said that wrong actions by captains harmed the team under their leadership.
"I talk about Bishan Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, MS Dhoni. I can talk about people whom I have been with. They have treated people like shit. Jo galat hai wo galat hai. Two wrongs cannot make one right. I say this openly, that our cricketers and team were destroyed by our captain," said Yograj (via the aforementioned source).
MS Dhoni and Kapil Dev are the only Indian captains to have lifted the ODI World Cup. Dhoni also guided India to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Irfan Pathan Part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-Winning Team
Irfan Pathan was part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team and won Player of the Match in the final against Pakistan. Notably, he was dropped from the national side after the 2012 season, when MS Dhoni captained all formats.
Pathan missed India’s 2011 ODI World Cup triumph and had limited appearances between 2009 and 2011. He returned briefly in 2012 before being permanently sidelined.
Pathan played 29 Tests, 120 ODIs, and 24 T20Is, scoring 1,105 Test runs and taking 100 wickets in Tests. He took a total of 301 international wickets, including 7/59 against Zimbabwe in 2005. He last played an international match during the 2012 T20 World Cup against South Africa.
In the IPL, Pathan represented multiple franchises, including Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, SunRisers Hyderabad, and Rising Pune Supergiants. After retiring from professional cricket, he is now working as a commentator.
