Mumbai Indians denied 51% stake as Surrey blocks majority takeover of Oval Invincibles

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the owners of Mumbai Indians, has acquired a significant stake in the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. RIL's subsidiary, RISE Worldwide, secured a 49% stake in both the men’s and women’s teams, while the majority remains with Surrey County Cricket Club (SCCC).
As T20 leagues continue to grow, several IPL franchises have been acquiring teams in various leagues across the world. The Mumbai Indians, the five-time champions of the IPL, have followed this trend and acquired teams in the USA (MI New York), South Africa (MI Cape Town), and the UAE (MI Emirates).
Mumbai Indians Acquire 49% Stake in Oval Invincibles in The Hundred
The Surrey County Cricket Club confirmed that RISE Worldwide will hold a 49% stake in the Oval Invincibles. The club is optimistic that the collaboration will help further strengthen their position as a leading franchise in the competition, especially following MI Cape Town's recent title win in the SA20.
"RISE will have a 49 per cent share of the Hundred team, with Surrey retaining the majority 51 per cent. The club hopes to benefit from Mumbai Indians' vast experience and proven success, fresh off lifting yet another league title in South Africa over the weekend, to further strengthen and maintain the team's position as the leading franchise in the competition," the county said in a statement.

Oval Invincibles, the most successful team in The Hundred, has been sold by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for GBP 123 million. RISE Worldwide acquired a 49% stake, worth GBP 60 million. The women’s team secured titles in 2021 and 2022, while the men’s team won in 2023 and 2024.
Mumbai Indians have won five titles in the Indian Premier League. MI has also won other prestigious trophies across multiple competitions, including the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, Major League Cricket (2023), ILT20 (2024), and SA20 (2025).
"Over 17 years, the dedication of the MI family has resulted in 11 league titles across the globe, including five IPL championships, two Champions League victories, and the inaugural WPL and Major League Cricket titles in 2023, ILT20 in 2024 and SA20 in 2025. Every team in the MI Family now has a winner's trophy," the statement said.
