The five-time IPL champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), went through a daunting season last year in 2024, under Hardik Pandya’s leadership, when the fans at the Wankhede Stadium booed the management and the premier all-rounder for taking the captaincy from Rohit Sharma.
Mumbai, in the last three seasons, finished with the wooden spoon twice. That shows their inconsistency with the overall performance in the season. In between 2017 and 2020, they became champions three times, and they will hope to bring the title home after four dried seasons.
Mumbai Indians face a tough challenge in the first half of the IPL 2025
In the opening game of the 18th edition of the 20-over tournament, Mumbai will face a massive challenger against the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, as they will be without their captain, Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder will serve a one-match ban due to the slow rate of offenses last season. One of Rohit Sharma or Suryakumar Yadav could lead the side in Pandya’s absence.
MI will travel to the Narendra Modi Stadium for another acid test against the Gujarat Titans. The latter has enjoyed three wins in five encounters between the two sides. Mumbai’s first home game at the Wankhede Stadium will be on March 31 before they again make a trip to Lucknow for the encounter against the Super Giants.
At the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Mumbai Indians will be up against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The Hardik Pandya-led side has a lead of 19-14 against the opponent in overall face-offs.
One of the biggest issues for the franchise last season was that they failed in crunch situations. They were ahead in many encounters, but couldn’t take them ahead to the finishing line. Mumbai Indians will miss Jasprit Bumrah for the first few games due to injury and that would be another concern for the management to find a solid Indian bowling partner for Trent Boult.
Mumbai Indians to play five home games in the second half of IPL 2025
The first clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad of the season for the Mumbai Indians will be at the Wankhede Stadium. With aggressive batters available on both sides, it’s expected to be a high-scoring affair. Chennai will come to Mumbai for the return fixture.
The first-afternoon fixture for the five-time champions in IPL 2025 will be against the Lucknow Super Giants. MI will be hopeful of developing the face-off numbers against this franchise, as they are way behind with a deficit of 1-5 in the head-to-head.
Mumbai Indians will again be on the road for the next encounter against the Rajasthan Royals, before facing Gujarat Titans at home on May 06. The final home clash for the franchise will be against Delhi on May 15 in the evening. During the 2020 season, they got four consecutive wins over this opposition, including the final.
