The Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise officially appointed Hardik Pandya as their new captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season on December 15. Following this decision, the team experienced a notable drop of 400,000 Twitter followers within an hour.

Since taking over the captaincy from former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting in 2013, Rohit Sharma has led the Mumbai Indians to a golden era, securing a record five titles in the IPL. The 36-year-old also led the Mumbai team to victory in the Champions League T20.

A user on X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a screenshot revealing that the Mumbai Indians lost 400k followers within just one hour.

Rohit Sharma hasn’t played T20Is for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England. The Indian captain took a break after the World Cup 2023 final loss and is expected to return for the 2-match Test series against South Africa, starting on December 26.

Hardik Pandya Will Assume Captaincy Of Mumbai Indians – Mahela Jayawardene

Mumbai Indians’ Global Head of Performance, Mahela Jayawardene, stated that appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain is a strategic move. He emphasized the legacy of leadership, spanning from Sachin Tendulkar to Ricky Ponting and Rohit Sharma.

“It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” Jayawardene said.

Hardik Pandya led the Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in their debut season, securing the championship by defeating the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2022 final. Pandya also led them to the final in 2023, where they narrowly lost to the Chennai Super Kings in a last-ball thriller.
