Musheer Khan, the younger brother of Sarfaraz Khan scored his second century in the ongoing U-19 World Cup 2023. His 131 off 126 against New Zealand U-19 powered India to a score of 295/8 in their 50 overs. This was after the Kiwis won the toss and chose to field on Tuesday at  Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein.

This was Musheer’s second century in this edition of the U-19 World Cup. In the process, he joined Shikhar Dhawan, who is the only other Indian cricketer with two centuries in a single U-19 World Cup edition. Musheer Khan’s scores in the World Cup read as 3, 118, 73 and 131. After the ton, he now is the top run-getter with 325 runs after just four innings in the ICC event.

Adarsh Singh scored 52 off 58 balls to give India a good start. The start was continued by Musheer who played a brilliant knock. His knock included 13 fours and three sixes. He played the sweep and the reverse sweep to good effect in this game.

He added an 87-run stand for the third wicket with Uday Sharan, the skipper who scored 35 off 57 deliveries. Aravelly Avanish, the wicketkeeper scored 17 off 18 balls. Priyanshu Moliya (10), and Sachin Dhas (15) came up with crucial contributions towards the end.

India who are on an unbeaten run now needs their bowlers to step up and defend the big target. The onus will be on Saumy Pandey, the left-arm spinner who has already picked up 8 wickets in three matches. Naman Tiwari, the left-arm pacer has picked up 8 wickets from three matches.

For the Kiwis pacer Mason Clarke picked up four wickets. Ryan Tsourgas and Ewald Schreuder picked one each. Only two out of the seven bowlers used completed their quota of 10 overs. The young Kiwis now will have to chase a stiff target of 296 runs to come back to winning ways. They were dismissed for just 140 against Pakistan in their previous match and lost the game in the process.

Sarfaraz Khan, while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo after his maiden call-up ahead of the second Test against England spoke about Musheer’s early days as a cricketer. He spoke about how he first took up bowling and then became a batter.

“If I batted 300 balls, Musheer would bat for 300 balls even if he’d done a lot of bowling. Our middle brother, Moin, would do the throwdowns. Having two cricketers in the house, he decided to switch to training” Sarfaraz said.

Sarfaraz also said that his younger brother is a better batter than him giving him his due credit for the hard work he has put in over the years. The elder brother lauded Musheer’s batflow and his mannerisms in the conversation.

“He’s a better batter than me. I’m not saying this because he’s my brother. Sometimes, I may be struggling but watching his technique and trying to work out what he’s doing would give me confidence. His mannerisms, bat flow is very good. Sometimes when I’m not batting well, I look at him and learn” added Sarfaraz.
