Najmul Hossain Shanto-led Bangladesh National Cricket Team started off their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign on a poor note at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, February 20.

Bangladesh, under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, faced a 6-wicket loss with 21 balls remaining at the hands of the India National Cricket Team.

Losing five wickets in the powerplay cost us the game - Najmul Hossain Shanto

India stars Shubman Gill, who hit a terrific ton, and Mohammed Shami, who bagged a 5-wicket haul, were the main reasons behind the downfall of the Bangla Tigers in their Champions Trophy opener.

However, Shanto refused to give them any credit and said that they lost the match because of poor batting in powerplay, where they lost five wickets. He added that the poor job on the field cost them the match. Najmul Hossain Shanto said:

"Losing five wickets in the powerplay cost us the game. I think so. Hridoy and Jaker batted brilliantly but we still made mistakes on the field.

"Dropped catches and a few run-outs missed, the result could have been different. Impressive batting from Hridoy and Jaker against their spinners.

I hope they will continue doing the same - Najmul Hossain Shanto

Najmul Hossain Shanto further said that he is hoping that Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) will continue to bat well for Bangladesh in the upcoming matches of the competition.

Najmul Hossain Shanto added that had they picked wickets with the new ball, the result of the match could have been different and said that they are ready for the next match against the Pakistan National Cricket Team. He said:

"I hope they will continue doing the same. I don't think so (if he thought the team needed an extra spinner in the XI).

"If we got wickets with the new ball it could have been different. We have played Pakistan there recently and I am sure boys will adapt to conditions in Rawalpindi."

How was Bangladesh's Performance vs India in their previous ODI?

The performance of Bangladesh was quite poor in their previous ODI match against India on October 19, 2023, in Pune during the ICC Cricket World Cup. They were decimated by the Men In Blue, ending with a below-par total of 256/8, which India chased down comfortably.

After electing to bat first, Bangladesh started off on a high. Openers Tanzid Hasan (51) and Litton Das (66) put on a solid 93-run partnership. Tanzid, in particular, was aggressive before falling to Kuldeep Yadav. Litton Das, meanwhile, struggled to accelerate and eventually fell to Ravindra Jadeja.

The middle order of the Tigers failed to capitalize on the start. Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Towhid Hridoy failed to provide stability, with Jadeja and Thakur picking crucial wickets. Mushfiqur Rahim (38) and Mahmudullah (46) attempted a late recovery, but with wickets falling at regular intervals, Bangladesh couldn’t post a big score.

With the ball, Bangladesh needed early wickets, but that didn't happen as the bowlers struggled against Indian batters. While Hasan Mahmud dismissed Rohit Sharma, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz removed both Gill and Shreyas Iyer, it wasn’t enough to derail India’s momentum as Virat Kohli smashed a spectacular century to power India to a dominant 7-wicket victory with 51balls remaining.
