The focus on England’s disastrous Australia tour has now fully turned towards Brendon McCullum and the way the head coach reacted to criticism after another Ashes debacle. Now, the former England captain Nasser Hussain has reacted to McCullum’s response to the criticism.
Following the heavy 4-1 defeat in the Ashes 2025-26, McCullum has faced massive criticism. England’s bold and attacking approach struggled badly in Australia. The fast pitches and demanding conditions exposed weaknesses in the strategy, and the loss at the SCG only added fuel to the fire.
Since then, there has been growing talk about whether Bazball needs changes rather than blind backing. Even the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has reportedly asked McCullum to remove the Bazball form from its regime if he wants to continue as the head coach.

The former England captain's stark verdict came during a candid interview following the series loss, where he openly challenged the head coach on his stubbornness towards his 'Bazball' philosophy.
The heated exchange with Brendon McCullum
Hussain revealed that the heated exchange unfolded when he questioned whether McCullum would be willing to change their aggressive approach after it was exposed on Australian pitches.
The cricket pundit had asked, as quoted by Sky Sports, “Can you personally change, or is it the Brendon McCullum philosophy? Can you change your ways, or is this how you’re going to play?”
Responding to the Englishman, McCullum made it clear that he strongly believes in his coaching philosophy but also felt that his views were being misunderstood. However, the coach has insisted that he is open to making a few changes, but he has full confidence in his approach.
McCullum said, “I sort of take offense to that, to be honest, Nas. I have conviction in my methods, but I’m not rigid in my beliefs.”
Nasser Hussain’s real shocker on McCullum
Later, Hussain explained why he pushed McCullum on this issue. While the head coach was fully confident in his methodology, the cricket pundit felt that England must accept that different situations demand different approaches, especially in challenging conditions like Australia.

Hussain wrote in his column for The Athletic: “McCullum took umbrage when I asked him on Thursday if he was willing to change. His point was that he has always been prepared to evolve, but whether he means it will be key now. He is right to have conviction in his methodology, but there also needs to be a realization that he and England need to adapt at times.”
Nasser Hussain's Stark 'Sacking' Warning to Brendon McCullum
Moving beyond his exchange with the New Zealander, Hussain delivered a blunt message to the ECB. He suggested that McCullum now needs to show that he can accept guidance from senior figures above him or just leave the job for the sake of England’s Test future.
He signed off by saying, “Will he be happy for someone above to tell him he has to change? He will have to be if he wants to stay in the job. Then he will have to demonstrate that he really is willing to do so and get other voices in his dressing room.”
