England captain Eoin Morgan will miss the third ODI against the Netherlands, which will be played in Wednesday due to a groin niggle. This has risen concerns over his form and fitness continue to dominate the narrative around England’s white-ball sides.

Jos Buttler will take over the captaincy in Morgan’s absence as the Irishman battles poor fitness and injuries in run up-to the T20 World cup 2022. Morgan finishes the series with no runs and two dismissals from the eight balls he faced.

The England skipper has endured a miserable series after falling for a second duck on Sunday, while he has been managing a groin problem having previously struggled with long-standing back and knee issues.

Eoin Morgan Battles Form As Well As Fitness Issues

Since the last year or so, Eoin Morgan’s bat has been silent for much of the time. His last half-century in any format came a year ago against Sri Lanka. Even in the IPL 2021, where he captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the final of the tournament, Morgan failed to come good with the bat and hence was not retained by the franchise or picked by any other team in the IPL 2022 auction.

Morgan himself had said at the start of the Netherlands ODIs, that he would rest himself for at least some of England’s international fixtures this summer due to his concerns about playing games on consecutive days. He had hurt himself by playing back-to-back matches in West Indies.

His right groin was a concern despite Morgan hoping to play all three games in the series “if possible”. But the injury, which happened while playing for Middlesex last month and felt during Sunday’s second ODI, has left him unable to do so.

England have already clinched a comprehensive series win, leading 2-0 with one to play, with the first of their victories seeing the visitors post a world-record score of 498-4 in Friday’s opener.
