Following the historic win over South Africa in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Netherlands captain Scott Edwards has fired a warning to the other teams.

The Netherlands stunned the Proteas by 38 runs (DLS method) to register their first win of the competition. Asked to bat first in a rain-marred game, the Dutch outfit recovered from 50 for 4 and then 112 for 6 to post a big total of 245 /8 in the allotted 43 overs. The architect of the big score was captain Scott Edwards’ unbeaten knock of 78 runs.

They scored more than 100 runs in the last 9 overs. In reply, South Africa made a steady start before an inexplicable collapse saw them getting reduced to 44 for 4 from 36 for 0. The African side just could not recover after those setbacks. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 207 runs as the Netherlands registered their first-ever win over a Test-playing nation at a 50-over World Cup.

Scott Edwards fires warning:

Buoyed by the win over South Africa, Scott Edwards has made it clear that he and his teammates are not competing in the World Cup just to make up the numbers. While their chances of making it to the semifinal are written off by many, the Netherlands have proved they have got what it takes to beat any team in the world on their day.

“I suppose we go into every game with our plans and our ways that we’re going to try and win the game. For us, it’s just about playing our best brand of cricket and we feel like if we play well enough on the day, we can beat any side,” said Scott Edwards in the post-match press conference.

“I think after qualifying we were pretty quick to set our minds on what we wanted to do at this tournament. Yeah, and we weren’t coming here just to have fun and enjoy it. We’re here to win games of cricket and give ourselves the best chance to make that next stage. So, yeah, South Africa is obviously a very strong side and they’ll be close to that semi-final spot. So, yeah, if we want to be amongst it, we’ve got to beat sides like this,” he added.

The Netherlands will be in action next on Saturday (October 21) when they take on Sri Lanka in Lucknow.
