Opener and interim vice-captain of the Test team, Rohit Sharma was called upon to bowl just a single delivery on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth and the last Test match of the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia in Brisbane.

Team India has been hit by wholesale of injuries before and throughout the tour to Australia; more than half a dozen first-choice players are absent. Navdeep Saini is the latest entrant to this unfortunate list. In the 36th over of Australia’s first innings, Saini, who made his Test debut in the third Test in Sydney, walked off the field with a groin injury after bowling 7.5 overs.

Rohit Sharma bowls medium pace; Karthik warns other Indian pacers

Rohit Sharma was asked by the captain, Ajinkya Rahane to complete the over. It was expected that Mayank Agarwal may bowl the one ball left in Saini’s over as Agarwal had earlier bowled an over in the ODI series. Also, Rohit has bowled just 7 overs in Test cricket since 2015; the right-hander rarely bowls owing to his shoulder injury.

To everyone’s surprise, Rohit, who has bowled off-spin entirely in his career, decided to take a longer run-up and bowl medium pace. Jogging a few steps, with a relaxed action, Rohit Sharma bowled an innocuous delivery at a speed of 102.1 KPH outside the off-stum which Marnus Labuschagne cut towards point for a single.

Rohit’s close friend, Dinesh Karthik took to Twitter to hilariously warn other Indian pacers – he tagged Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami – to be wary of the ‘new fast bowler’ in the team.

“@Jaspritbumrah93 and and @MdShami11 better watch out , new fast bowler in the wings @ImRo45 #absolutelyrapid” tweeted the former KKR captain.

Apart from not having the services of senior pacers, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the tour Down Under – both the pacers sustained injuries during the IPL – India lost Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah ahead of the Brisbane Test. KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin also are missing due to injuries, while Virat Kohli returned home to attend the birth of his child.

Navdeep Saini’s injury on Day 1 depletes an already weaker bowling attack comprising of two debutants, a bowler who has bowled 10 balls in his maiden Test, and another with an experience of just a couple of Tests.
The game hangs in a balance at sumps on Day 1 at the Gabba. Despite Marnus Labuschagne’s ton and losing Navdeep Saini, a young Indian bowling attack have the hosts 5 down for 274 runs.
