New Zealand has announced its squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies, which is set to begin on November 16 in Christchurch. The Black Caps are currently facing the West Indies in the five-match T20I series, which will be followed by the ODI and Test series.
Surprisingly, former New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will miss the upcoming ODI series against the Caribbean side. Williamson, who recently retired from T20I cricket, has decided to focus on the upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against the West Indies next month.
Blair Tickner retains his spot, as New Zealand announces squad for West Indies ODIs
Williamson’s absence allows other players to step up as New Zealand continues to manage workloads amidst the busy home season. All-rounder Mitchell Santner will once again lead the Black Caps in the upcoming ODI series against the West Indies.
They will look to carry forward the momentum from their recent ODI series triumph over England. The New Zealand side will also be strengthened by the return of experienced pacer Matt Henry, who missed the final two matches against England due to a calf strain.
NZC said that Henry is currently undergoing conditioning and rehab to be fully fit for both the ODI and Test series against the West Indies.
Meanwhile, Blair Tickner has retained his spot in the ODI squad after his outstanding performances against England, where he claimed back-to-back Player of the Match awards for his impressive spells of 4/34 and 4/64.
Tickner’s remarkable efforts with the ball helped New Zealand secure only their second-ever ODI series win over England. Well, Michael Bracewell, Devon Conway, and Mark Chapman have also been named in the ODI squad. The spin attack will be handled by Santner, Bracewell, and Rachin Ravindra.
Key players will miss the NZ vs WI ODI Series
Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Kyle Jamieson, and Nathan Smith complete a strong pace-bowling attack.
However, several key players, including Mohammad Abbas (ribs), Finn Allen (foot), Lockie Ferguson (hamstring), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O’Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Ben Sears (hamstring), have been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series due to their respective injuries.
New Zealand’s ODI squad will gather in Christchurch on November 14, just two days before the first match of the upcoming ODI series at Hagley Oval on November 16. The Black Caps will aim to continue their impressive home record, having won 10 consecutive ODI series on home soil.
Their confidence will be high after a dominant 3-0 clean sweep against England last month. And Kiwi head coach Rob Walter stated, “The West Indies are always dangerous and have a host of players who can change a game in any format. It’s another important series for us as we continue to grow and improve in the format, so we’re looking forward to what’s to come.”
