New Zealand, the runners-up of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, lock horns with the World Cup semi-finalists and former runners-up of the 2024 T20 World Cup, South Africa, in a five-match bilateral T20I series. The two teams will clash for the third time in the series, as they play the 3rd T20I at Eden Park in Auckland on the 20th of March.

New Zealand made an unconvincing start to the series with a loss in the first game against a second-tier South African side, which is led by Keshav Maharaj. However, this was also not the same New Zealand side that just lost the T20 World Cup final to India. Mitchell Santner, the skipper, however, played the first three matches of the series.

This article follows a detailed probable analysis of the New Zealand Playing XI vs the South Africa Playing XI ahead of the third match between the two teams in the five-match T20I series.

New Zealand Playing XI vs South Africa—3rd T20I

Openers: Devon Conway, Tom Latham

New Zealand's openers struggled to get a good start in the first game of the series. However, Devon Conway got to his first half-century since the India series. Conway's good form can help New Zealand take the upper hand until Tom Latham, who is back in a T20 side after a long time, finds some form, as he has been dismissed for small scores on both of the occasions.

Middle Order Batters and All-Rounders: Tim Robinson, Nick Kelly, Mitchell Santner, Jimmy Neesham, Josh Clarkson

The New Zealand middle order is relatively inexperienced. Though the likes of Robinson have played former T20I games and have impressed with their performance, they have done it under the shadow of their seniors; however, now it is upon the youngsters Nick Kelly and Tim Robinson to lead New Zealand through tough times in the absence of any senior batter.

This game would also mark the final game for Mitchell Santner before he departs for India. Jimmy Neesham and Josh Clarkson are the two batting all-rounders, and Neesham is among the most capped T20 players in the squad after Santner's departure.

Bowlers: Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears, Cole McConchie, Lockie Ferguson

Kyle Jamieson got some of his rhythm back since the India series and was well supported by the likes of Ben Sears and Lockie Ferguson, who picked up six wickets between them in the second game at Hamilton. Cole McConchie has been backed as the second spinner in the side after Ish Sodhi was ruled out due to injury.

New Zealand Playing XI: Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Tim Robinson, Nick Kelly, Mitchell Santner, Jimmy Neesham, Josh Clarkson, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears, Cole McConchie, and Lockie Ferguson.

South Africa Playing XI vs New Zealand—3rd T20I

Openers: Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen

The South African team looks even more naive and inexperienced in terms of their players. It's not only a second-tier team, but also a team full of debutants. Connor Esterhuizen, the wicket-keeper, made his debut in this series and is yet to fire with the bat, though he led South Africa to a slow victory in the opening game. Tony de Zorzi is back from his injury, which ruled him out of the T20 World Cup.

Middle Order Batters and All-Rounders: Rubin Hermann, Jason Smith, Dian Forrester, Wiaan Mulder

After Jordan Hermann was ruled out due to a hamstring injury, Rubin Hermann and Jason Smith are the two pillars of the South African middle order who can anchor the batting innings during the middle phase. Wiaan Mulder, though not much known for his T20 antics, is a very special cricketer for the Proteas.

Bowlers: George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Nqobani Mokoena, Gerald Coetzee, Ottneil Baartman

South Africans are also experienced on the bowling front, like the Kiwis. They have veteran spinner Keshav Maharaj alongside all-rounder George Linde. Alongside the two spinners, they have former World Cup campaigner Gerald Coetzee and Ottneil Baartman in the team, who are known faces in T20 internationals.

South Africa Playing XI: Tony de Zorzi, Connor Esterhuizen, Rubin Hermann, Jason Smith, Dian Forrester, Wiaan Mulder, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Nqobani Mokoena, Gerald Coetzee, and Ottneil Baartman.
