A day after England‘s white-ball tour of Bangladesh was postponed, it has been announced that Bangladesh will host New Zealand for a 5-match T20I series from September 1 to 10, just nine days before the resumption of the 2021 IPL in UAE. All the matches will take place at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka
This series would serve well for both teams in preparation for the T20 World Cup, which will be held from October 17 to November 14 in UAE and Oman.
This will be New Zealand’s first tour to Bangladesh since 2013, when the visitors were white-washed 3-0 in the ODI series, but won the solitary T20I after drawing the Test series 1-1.
Between then and now, Bangladesh have toured New Zealand twice – for a full tour in 2016 and a limited-overs series 2021. They couldn’t manage a single win. In their most recent games across March and April, New Zealand whitewashed the visitors in both the ODIs and the T20Is.
Kane Williamson’s troop will arrive on August 24 and will play a practice game on August 29, before the series commences on September 1, followed by matches on September 3, 5, 8, and 10.
Bangladesh are currently hosting Australia for a five-match T20I series, in which they have taken a lead by winning the first match on Tuesday by 23 runs.
Bangladesh’s home season took a hit when their series with England, of three ODIs and three T20Is originally slated to take place in September-October this year ahead of the World Cup, was postponed to March 2023. Both England and New Zealand are also expected to tour Pakistan before the mega-event.
The postponement of England’s tour to Bangladesh means that their players can take part in the second phase of the IPL 2021, to resume from September 19 to October 15 in the UAE, the venue for the T20 World Cup. While there are several English players associated with IPL teams, only two Bangladeshis – Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman – are involved in the tournament.
