New Zealand takes on PNG in the penultimate group game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in Trinidad on Monday, June 17. The match starts from 8 pm IST which is 10.30 am local time.

Both teams have already been eliminated from the tournament. This is the first time that New Zealand have suffered a group-stage exit from the T20 World Cup.

They played the final of the 2021 World Cup against Australia and played the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 against Pakistan. PNG on the other hand, have lost all their three games so far. Their previous defeat was against Afghanistan.

The Kiwis lost to Afghanistan by 84 runs chasing 160 to win as they were bowled out for 75. Against the WIndies chasing 150 to win, they were restricted to 136/9. They came back with a win against Uganda and are the favorites to notch up another win against PNG.

However, these two wins will not be enough for their qualification. The loss to West Indies will come back to haunt them.

The Kiwis did play bilateral ties leading up to the World Cup. They drew 2-2 against Pakistan but they did not play any warm-up games leading into the tournament which is why they looked very rusty in both the matches against Afghanistan and West Indies.

After the shocking defeat against Afghanistan, it looked like they were not out of the shock yet when they took the field against West Indies who got the better of them as well.
