Former international umpire Anil Chaudhary was shocked that the DRS timer was not shown on the big screen but felt Dewald Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja made the real mistake during the controversial moment in the IPL 2025 clash between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings.

In a tense moment during the Chennai Super Kings' chase of 214 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a controversial blunder unfolded on the third ball of the 17th over. Lungi Ngidi delivered a knee-high full toss aimed at the middle and leg stump at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

How the Dewald Brevis-Ravindra Jadeja blunder unfolded at Chinnaswamy Stadium?

Dewald Brevis missed the shot and was struck on the pad. The umpire raised his finger almost instantly, signaling out, which also meant the ball was declared dead and the 15-second countdown to ask for a review had started. But Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja didn't seem to notice.

They began to run a single, and a sharp direct hit from point caught them off guard. Only after the run did Brevis turn to Jadeja to discuss the decision. By then, it was too late, as the time to challenge the umpire's call had already expired, leading to a heated argument between the match officials and the CSK duo as Brevis had to walk back for a first-ball duck against the RCB.

Replays later showed that Lungi Ngidi's delivery was clearly drifting down the leg side, and the ball would have missed the stumps. Had Dewald Brevis opted for a review in time, he would have been saved without a doubt. Unfortunately, the delay in taking the call cost him his wicket.

Anil Chaudhary defends umpires, blames Dewald Brevis-Ravindra Jadeja for the error

Reacting to the whole drama, Anil Chaudhary explained that the on-field umpire usually alerts batters when only five seconds are left on the DRS timer, so the message was likely given to the batters who are responsible to see the timer and umpire’s signal.

The veteran umpire said that it was shocking that Dewald Brevis and Jadeja kept running after the out signal, as the ball becomes dead at that point and runs were not going to count. He also denied any communication gap between the players and umpires. The umpire said that it is a part of their protocol that even when it's 5 seconds to go, the umpire tells the batsman to see.

Anil Chaudhary said on Star Sports, “I think the batsman wasted his time by running. And he probably couldn't hear the umpire's communication. Because I saw the TV umpire telling him that it's beyond 15 seconds. Which must have been conveyed by the TV umpire.”

Anil Chaudhary questions why the DRS timer was not appearing on the big screen

Chaudhary expressed his concern that the DRS timer was not appearing on the big screen, but emphasized that umpires aren’t responsible for screen operations. He further explained, “But it didn't come on the big screen. This was a confusing part for the players. Generally, it should have come there. So, this is a matter of concern. Why didn't it come on the big screen?”

Defending the umpires and Dewald Brevis and Ravindra Jadeja, Chaudhary said, “I don't think it's the umpire's fault. The umpires were not operating the big screen, so it wasn't their fault. The big screen operator is a different person. Yes, it's his fault. But for the players, I would say it's their bad luck.”

He signed off by saying, “Because if they didn't see it, they can't blame them so much. But anyway, the TV umpire and on-field umpires discussed it. Conveyed it to the players. And the umpire's decision is final. And it will be accepted. And that's what happened.”
