Star India National Cricket Team left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has revealed a game-changing advice that he received from the premier pacer Mohammed Siraj.
Arshdeep Singh said that Mohammed Siraj advised him on how to enjoy the "boring times" in red-ball cricket, and he really liked the tip he received from the senior player.
He gave me this small tip. I really liked it - Arshdeep Singh
Mohammed Siraj was the main man for the India National Cricket Team in the five-match Test series against the England National Cricket Team away from home.
Siraj brought out his best in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and was the only pacer alongside Chris Woakes to play all five matches of the series.
Although Chris Woakes got injured on Day 1 of the final Test, Siraj was breathing fire even on the last day at the Kennington Oval in London and picked up the final wicket for India to clinch the victory.
Siraj bowled 1113 balls on the tour, which was the most by any bowler, and he finished as the leading wicket-taker, picking up 23 wickets at an average of 32.43, an economy of 4.02, and a strike rate of 48.39.
On one side, Mohammed Siraj played all five matches; on the other side, Arshdeep Singh didn't get any opportunities. The Punjab pacer, who is currently playing for North Zone in the Duleep Trophy, spoke about how he learnt about enjoying the "boring times" in red-ball cricket after receiving Mohammed Siraj's advice.
"In Test cricket or red-ball cricket, there is a time when the day gets boring. In the session after lunch, mostly the ball doesn't do anything. So, how can you enjoy that?
"I spoke to [Mohammed] Siraj and he told me that when nothing is happening, how you enjoy that phase would tell you how successful you could be in red-ball cricket. He gave me this small tip. I really liked it," Arshdeep said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
In the last couple of months I was with the team, I trained a lot - Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep Singh is an all-format player for the India National Cricket Team, but he regularly features only in T20I cricket. In ODIs, he gets limited chances and has not played any Test matches for the country.
The pacer further said that he trained a lot in the last couple of months in England and is enjoying bowling in the Duleep Trophy. He said:
"In the last couple of months I was with the team, I trained a lot, bowled a lot and worked a lot with the S&C [strength and conditioning].
"I worked on fitness as well and that helped me bowl a decent long spell. After 15-17 overs, my body feels well. It's [the ball] coming out really well. Not many wickets but yes, they will come as well in the future."
The mindset is about how quickly you can adapt - Arshdeep Singh
From red-ball cricket, Arshdeep Singh will switch to white-ball cricket in the Asia Cup 2025, but the pacer is not worried about it, as he practiced with a white ball in England and knows how to adapt quickly. He said:
"The mindset is about how quickly you can adapt. In today's cricket, a batsman can hit against the red ball and he can play conservatively against a white ball.
"So, it's all about how you can adapt according to the situation, according to the wicket, according to the weather, when you have to put in effort, when you have to conserve yourself."
