Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has demanded the Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team win the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 for their coach and legendary batter Rahul Dravid, who is all set to step down as head coach at the end of the tournament.

Sehwag recently said that Team India must dedicate their efforts to winning the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 for Dravid, giving him a sitting farewell. Dravid, one of India's cricketing legends, had an illustrious career but missed out on winning a World Cup during his playing days.

However, the former Indian captain has another shot at the coveted title as coach after missing the golden opportunity in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at home. Under his coaching, the Indian cricket team reached the semifinals of the 2022 T20 World Cup and the final of the ODI World Cup 2024.

Now, the Men in Blue have already qualified for the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals, and Sehwag wants Rohit and his army to do what they did for Sachin Tendulkar in the ODI World Cup in 2011. Reflecting on the 2011 World Cup, Sehwag highlighted how the Indian team rallied to win the coveted trophy for the legendary batter Tendulkar.

The former Indian opener believes that now it is the turn of the current team to win the World Cup for Dravid, as he has not received the badge of being a World Cup winner despite his illustrious playing career. Sehwag hopes that Dravid can finally earn the prestigious title of World Cup winner as a coach.

Virender Sehwag was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz: “We played the 2011 World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar. So, this T20 World Cup can be for Rahul Dravid. At least as a coach he gets to win the World Cup and get the badge of being a World Cup winner, which he didn't get as a player.”

Rohit Sharma made our hearts happy: Virender Sehwag

Meanwhile, in a majestic performance for India at St Lucia, Rohit Sharma smashed 92 runs off just 41 balls and helped his team beat Australia by 24 runs in their final Super-8 match on June 24. He smoked eight sixes in his sensational innings, helping India post a formidable total of 205-5 in their 20 overs.

The 37-year-old also shattered numerous records with his amazing knock, and Sehwag admitted he only expected the Indian opener to stay at the crease through the powerplay, but he brutally hammered Australian bowlers and gave a full-paisa wasool performance.

Sehwag signed off by saying, “I have never seen better entertainment than this in this World Cup. I was expecting that he would be at the crease for just the first six overs. But he batted even after the powerplay, and look what he did. He made our hearts happy, what more do you want?”

Notably, India will face the defending champions, England, in the second semifinal of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 in Guyana on Thursday, June 27. The first semifinal will be played between South Africa and Afghanistan on the same day at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad & Tobago.
