After slamming Virat Kohli in IPL 2024, Sunil Gavaskar has come in the defense of the former India captain who is going through a tough T20 World Cup.

Heading into the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, Virat Kohli displayed sublime form in this year's Indian Premier League. Therein, he was opening for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru and his form was such that he ended up as the highest run-scorer for his team and in the league overall.

Virat Kohli's slump in form

Virat Kohli amassed 741 runs from 15 matches in IPL 2024 at an average of more than 65 with his strike rate going higher than ever. It was the first time that Kohli played at a strike rate of 150+ and this was a very good sign for him and the Indian team heading into the T20 WC. However, it hasn't really been the case for Kohli despite having chances to open the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma.

From 3 matches, Virat Kohli has scored just 5 runs - 1 against Ireland and 4 against Pakistan. Yesterday during India's 3rd Group A game against co-hosts USA, the right-hand batter departed for a golden duck by former India U-19 pacer Saurabh Netravalkar. The slump in his form is mainly happening because of the tricky conditions on offer in New York.

India will be playing their 4th and final group match on June 15th against Canada but this time the Nassau County Stadium won't host the game. The Central Broward Regional Park in Florida will be hosting the fixture and that stands as the last chance for Kohli to make amends in his batting and hit his form before the Super Eights begin.

What did Sunil Gavaskar say?

While speaking to Star Sports recently, Sunil Gavaskar came in the support of Virat Kohli for the slump in his form at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Gavaskar backed Kohli to get runs under his belt and claimed that if he has not scored in 3 games, that doesn't mean he is a bad player.

Gavaskar believes that Virat Kohli had a few bad days in the office, which is quite normal to happen, and asked all the Indian fans to have faith in the batter.

"When you get three low scores, it doesn't mean he is not batting well. Sometimes you get good deliveries. On any other day, the ball would've gone wide or over the slip for a boundary, today it didn't. So, there's nothing to worry about. We have to show faith in him. Much believe that he is going to come good, sooner rather than later," Gavaskar said.

"The biggest motivation for any players is to win matches, especially when you are playing for your country. He has done so well for India over the years and won so many games," Gavaskar added.

"I think he recognizes that. We are in the early phases of the tournament. There's Super 8s, semi-finals, and hopefully the final. All he needs to do is show patience and faith in himself, which I think he has plenty," Sunil Gavaskar concluded.
