New Zealand and Australia were up against each other in the second match of the three-match series on Friday (23rd February). The match between the two teams took place at Eden Park in Auckland.

New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first at Eden Park in Auckland. Steve Smith and Travis Head gave Australia a brutal start and added 32 runs in just 2 overs. However, after that hosts applied the breaks and removed the right-hander for just 11 runs.

Travis Head (45) and Mitchell Marsh (21) then batted superbly well and added 53 runs for the second wicket. Their stand together brought Australia back into the game after the wicket of Smith and helped them score some quick runs.

New Zealand then snatched the momentum back as they after their partnership picked quick wickets and turned the game around. Glenn Maxwell (6), Jos Inglis (5), Tim David (17), and Matthew Wade (1) perished early.

But Pat Cummins played a brutal cameo in the end. He scored 28 runs and was supported well by Nathan Ellis (11) as Australia posted a fighting total of 174 runs on the board. New Zealand bowlers were brilliant with the ball in the middle phase.

Lockie Ferguson was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of 4/12 in just 3.5 overs. Apart from him, Adam Milne, Ben Sears, and Mitchell Santner picked two wickets each. Their effort helped the hosts bundle out the opposition for a total of under 180 runs.

New Zealand were off to a dreadful start in their chase. Fin Allen (6) perished in the first over and then Will Young (5) too couldn’t get going as Pat Cummins removed him. Skipper Mitchell Santner promoted himself but the move didn’t work as well.

Mitchell Santner perished for just 7 runs and immediately after his wicket, Mark Chapman (2) perished too. New Zealand was left tottering at 29/4 and it seemed that the game would be done and dusted quickly. But that wasn’t the case as Glenn Phillips kept his team in the hunt.

The batter single-handedly kept New Zealand in the game and slammed 42 runs off 35 balls. He was looking threatening with the bat but Adam Zampa got better off him and removed him at the crucial phase of the game and his wicket reduced the hosts to 83/7.

Joe Clarkson (10), and Trent Boult (16) entertained the crowd with some hitting in the end but they failed to take the team home.  Australian bowlers were at the top of the game as they bundled out New Zealand for 102 runs to win the game by a margin of 73 runs.

Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers as he returned with the figures of 4/34. Apart from him, Nathan Ellis picked two wickets were Josh Hazelwood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh picked one wicket each. Their valiant effort with the ball helped Australia clinch the series.
