After having retired hurt in the game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, veteran MI batter Rohit Sharma will now be undergoing some scans following a hamstring injury.
In their fourth match of IPL 2026, the Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma made a promising start for the franchise at their home ground, the Wankhede Stadium. He had played a fine knock in their opening game of the season, where Rohit scored a stunning 78, striking at over 200.
However, the Mumbai Indians saw their veteran batter being retired hurt for a score of 19 after having faced 13 balls against RCB. Sharma himself called for the substitute player after he defended the 13th ball of his innings. MI eventually lost the game by 18 runs.
Rohit Sharma to undergo scans after massive injury against RCB
Rohit Sharma made a good start; however, he struggled with his stance as he could not advance down the wickets. Sharma, despite playing a great six over the mid-wicket boundary, could not fire for long. Sharma's absence just when the spinners came into the attack cost MI big time.
Rickelton was also dismissed shortly after that, while Tilak Varma was dismissed within a short span as well. Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Sherfane Rutherford, despite all attempts, could not take the MI innings past the set target.
Rohit Sharma is now set to undergo scans following a hamstring injury in the game against RCB. His availability for the next game against the Punjab Kings will only be confirmed after the scans, as per a report in Cricbuzz. The match is scheduled for the 16th of April.
Should Sherfane Rutherford be promoted to a new role for MI?
Mumbai Indians lost the game by a close margin, despite chasing a massive total of 241 runs. This loss clearly means that their batting does possess the power to chase such big totals; however, they went wrong with their strategies.
Considering his consecutive failures, Tilak Varma could be dropped from the XI, while Sherfane Rutherford could actually find a new role at the no. 5 position. Quinton de Kock could make his way into the side opening for MI alongside Rohit, while Ryan Rickelton can be shifted into a new position at no. 3.
The batting strength could be heightened with Sherfane Rutherford, who had a major role to play for the Pretoria Capitals and the West Indies, when he piled on runs after being promoted to face more deliveries than he often did. MI could put his form to good use.
What can MI do to fix their concerns in IPL 2026?
Mumbai's primary concerns are with the ball and not with the bat. The players have batted well on many occasions, including the game vs the Rajasthan Royals and the recent match against RCB. Despite a strong show with the bat, they could not win the match, due to their loose ends with the ball.
Unlike the seasons when MI won several titles under Rohit Sharma, the Hardik Pandya-led side does not have a spinner who can control the innings through the middle overs. Also, the lack of pressure built by the rest of the batters has reduced the wicket-taking ability of Jasprit Bumrah as well.
MI might miss Rohit Sharma in their next game; however, their main concern would surely be to make some changes to their bowling unit.
