Suryakumar Yadav could part ways with Mumbai Indians (MI) ahead of the IPL 2027 season after a disappointing 2026 campaign. The experienced batter recently lost India's T20I captaincy, and reports suggest he could consider a new challenge if he does not receive a leadership role with the Mumbai franchise.

Mumbai Indians endured a poor IPL 2026 season, finishing ninth in the table with just four wins from 14 matches. The disappointing campaign has sparked discussions about changes within the squad, putting the futures of several senior players, including skipper Hardik Pandya, under scrutiny before the next auction.

Suryakumar Yadav's Future at Mumbai Indians Remains Uncertain

Speaking on the RevSportz Hindi YouTube channel, Rohit Juglan said Suryakumar Yadav's future at MI remains uncertain. He added that Tilak Varma is currently the leading candidate for the captaincy. If Suryakumar does not get the leadership role, he could consider moving to another franchise.

"Suryakumar Yadav is 50-50 at this point. He's neither completely in nor completely out. No one is giving a clear confirmation. Some say everything has been settled after the meeting, while others believe he could leave if he doesn't get the captaincy."

"As far as I know, Tilak Varma is Mumbai's No. 1 captaincy contender at the moment. So, if Surya doesn't get the captaincy, he may move to another team. Right now, it's a 50-50 situation."

Suryakumar Yadav Faces Uncertain Future After Difficult 2026 Season

The selectors dropped Suryakumar from India's T20I squad despite leading the team to the 2026 T20 World Cup title. In IPL 2026, he scored just 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76.

Despite a disappointing IPL 2026 season, Suryakumar remains one of Mumbai Indians' greatest batters. Since joining the franchise in 2018, he has scored 4,020 runs in 125 innings at a strike rate of 151.24, making him the franchise's second-highest run-scorer behind former skipper Rohit Sharma.

Suryakumar enjoyed an outstanding IPL 2025 season before his form dipped in 2026. If Mumbai Indians trade him, they will lose an experienced match-winner who has played a key role in the franchise's success over the past eight seasons.

Kolkata Knight Riders Could Target Suryakumar Yadav

Kolkata Knight Riders are considering major changes after two disappointing seasons since winning the IPL 2024 title. If Mumbai Indians decide to trade or release Suryakumar, KKR could target their former player to strengthen both their middle order and leadership group.

Before joining Mumbai Indians for ₹3.2 crore in 2018, Suryakumar represented Kolkata Knight Riders from 2014 to 2017. He played an important role in KKR's IPL 2014 title-winning campaign, averaging nearly 33 with a strike rate of 140.12 in the middle order.

With Ajinkya Rahane retiring from cricket and Rinku Singh still gaining leadership experience, Kolkata Knight Riders could view Suryakumar as a strong captaincy option. Despite his recent struggles, he showed encouraging signs of form in the Mumbai T20 League.
