Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara has issued a stern warning to the Indian National Cricket Team over Yashasvi Jaiswal after he missed his century in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston. Yashasvi Jaiswal is unquestionable as a batter, but in the field, he is unpredictable.

After a blazing century at Headingley and a fluent 87 in the first innings of the second Anderson-Tendulkar Test at Edgbaston, the young Indian opener has cemented his reputation as England’s new headache with the bat, averaging a jaw-dropping 100 against them.

But his butter-fingered performances in the field are far different from his batting brilliance, at least for the last few Test matches. At Headingley, Jaiswal dropped a jaw-dropping four catches, gifting lifelines to Harry Brook, Ollie Pope, and Ben Duckett in the five-match Test series opener.

Duckett, dropped on 97, made India pay dearly with a match-defining 149 as England chased down 371 runs in the final innings to take a 1-0 lead in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. As both India and England are up against each other in the second Test at Edgbaston, Kumar Sangakkara dropped a bombshell.

Sangakkara, who worked closely with the left-handed batter during his IPL stint with Rajasthan Royals, believes that the missed hundred at Edgbaston might haunt Jaiswal more than expected. The Sri Lankan legend fears that the young Indian batter's disappointment could spill into his fielding, especially now that he’s been removed from the crucial slip and gully positions.

Kumar Sangakkara was quoted as saying by Sky Sports, “I mean. If Jaiswal has to go out and field just now after getting out the way he did, so close to 100, you are not getting anything from him on the field. He will just still be thinking about, ‘Oh my god. I missed another 100. How many balls am I going to go and hit? When is my next batting? This pitch is flat. Will I get another batting turn?' That’s how Jaiswal thinks.”

Kumar Sangakkara backs Yashasvi Jaiswal as a future great

Meanwhile, the former Sri Lankan captain, who first saw Yashasvi Jaiswal as a young talent at Rajasthan Royals in 2020, is proud of the Indian opener’s remarkable rise, for which he credited the youngster’s passion, hard work, and hunger for success.

The legendary batter also mentioned Jaiswal’s sharp cricketing mind, fearless approach, and hunger to succeed, saying he always looks to score, even in defense. Sangakkara further noted, “There’s one thing that's unmistakable about Jaiswal. He’s got this hunger, this drive that comes from deep within, that he wants to be the best at what he does. And that drives him.”

He signed off by saying, “Great technique, great poise, great defense, very solid in every single decision that he makes. He is all about scoring runs. Even in defense, he is like, ‘How do I get off strike?’ and you don’t see any fear in him as well. He is brilliant. I absolutely love him as a person, but as a cricketer too, he is a gun.”
