"Our cricket is destroyed": Aaqib Javed makes honest confession on Pakistan after T20 World Cup disaster

Back-to-back defeats in the ICC multiple-nation events took away the Pakistan National Cricket Team from its glorious past. The team, which was graced by some of the best in business, has now been sustaining back-to-back criticisms from the former international cricket.

Ahead of the third match of the three-match ODI series, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Aaqib Javed tried to defend the team by saying they got multiple wins in bilateral contests in the recent past. Javed wanted to say that it would be wrong to judge Pakistan based on their performance in the T20 World Cup 2026.

In the recently concluded 2026 T20 World Cup, the cricket board had high expectations from the Salman Ali Agha-led Pakistan cricket team. Despite being brutally defeated by the arch-rivals India in a one-sided match, Agha and his boys somehow made their way into the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Because of a relatively low run rate, they were knocked out of the title race, even after claiming a much-needed win against Sri Lanka in their last match of the phase.

Is Pakistan cricket nearing its last page?

"Not being able to beat India in the World Cup is not an excuse, the result there is 8–0, & even the world’s best captains have played from 1975 to 2026, so set that aside. In the Super 8 stage, one match was washed out due to rain, and we lost one match nothing else happened," Aaqib Javed said in the press conference along with Misbahul Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Asad Shafique.

"Against Sri Lanka, winning by that margin wasn’t achievable. We lost only one match. We were eliminated only on net run rate. Making it such a huge issue is too much. It’s a big issue, but not so big that our cricket is destroyed or that we can’t compete anywhere in the world", he further said to defend the team from more criticisms.

Aaqib Javed tried to defend Pakistan

In the same attempt, Javed counted against which leading teams they performed well in the recent past. He talked about the Test series against England, ODIs against Australia and South Africa, and mentioned their performance in the Champions Trophy 2025 as well.

The PCB selector said that the team might not be able to win the Champions Trophy 2025, but they did well in the tournament.

"We won the Test series against England, which no one expected. In Australia, we won the ODI series after 27 years, and after that, we beat South Africa 3–0, which no one had been able to do until now. We also fought well in the Test series."

"In the 202,5 CT, there was an incident, but before that the team’s performance was going fine. Even now, if you look at it, we have won series against SA, Australia & SL", Aaqib Javed stated.
