In the 22nd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team and Hashmatullah Shahidi-led Afghanistan National Cricket Team locked horns at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai on Monday, October 23.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. They made a sole change to their playing XI as vice-captain Shadab Khan was back in the team in place of ill Mohammad Nawaz. Afghanistan also made a change to their playing XI as Noor Ahmad replaced Fazalhaq Farooqi.

Batting first, Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq provided their side with a good start and they added 56 runs for the opening wicket. Imam-ul-Haq once again fell to a short ball, but Abdullah showcased sheer class and hit a wonderful 58 runs off 75 balls, with 5 fours and 2 sixes.

After that Pakistan lost wickets at regular intervals, but Babar Azam stood strong on one end and played a good innings. He scored 74 runs off 92 balls, with 4 fours and 1 maximum.

Following the dismissal of Babar Azam, Shadab Khan (40) and Iftikhar Ahmed (40) took responsibility and the duo played an attacking brand of cricket to help their side post 282/7 on the board in 50 overs.

In the bowling department for Afghanistan, Noor Ahmad emerged as the top performer with his 3-wicket haul. Also, Naveen-ul-Haq picked two wickets while Azmatullah Omarzai and Mohammad Nabi got one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) played an attacking brand of cricket and smashed the opposition bowlers all over the park. The duo added 130 runs in 128 balls for the opening wicket and frustrated Babar Azam & Co.

The No.3 batter Rahmat Shah carried on the momentum provided by openers and he also hit a sensational fifty. This is the first time the top 3 Afghanistan batters scored 50+ in a World Cup match.

Hashmatullah Shahidi next came to bat and he looked scratchy initially and was under pressure. However, he got some poor deliveries and hit them for fours to get some confidence under his belt.

In the end, Rahmat Shah (77) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (48) remained unbeaten and steered their side to a convincing 8-wicket win over the Men In Green. This was Afghanistan’s first-ever win over Pakistan in ODIs.
