Afghanistan will likely have the services of their star spinner Rashid Khan for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Pakistan. The Afghanistan T20I skipper recently pulled out of The Hundred due to a back problem.
Earlier in June too, he faced the issue in his back and was rested for the one-off Test against Bangladesh. He, however, played in the succeeding ODI and the T20I series before plying his trade for MI New York in the inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket (MLC).
And soon after starring for the New York-based outfit, he decided to skip the Hundred to recover from the back problem. Following this withdrawal from The Hundred, there were doubts over his participation in the ODI series against Pakistan. The series will be the last opportunity for both teams to finetune their preparation ahead of the Asia Cup.
Rashid Khan likely to play against Pakistan:
While it was expected that Rashid Khan might miss the ODI series against Pakistan, it looks like he would recover in time for the three-match contest. Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief selector Asadullah Khan has stated that Rashid Khan skipped The Hundred only because he wanted some rest to recover and be fully fit to play against Pakistan.
“He (Rashid) skipped the Hundred for these games (against Pakistan) as he wanted some rest to be fully fit for the Pakistan game. Consistently he is playing cricket so he took a rest from Hundred for the Pakistan series,” Asadullah told Cricbuzz.
“We had a preparation camp in Kabul and the next camp will be in Hambantota from August 10 and he (Rashid) will join the camp in Hambantota,” he added.
The three-match ODI series between Afghanistan and Pakistan will take place from August 22 in Sri Lanka. The series will end on August 26. Four days later, the Asia Cup will get underway. While Pakistan are in Group A with India and Nepal, Afghanistan have been clubbed with Bangladesh and defending champions Sri Lanka in Group B.
