In the wake of Pakistan’s poor show in the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, their former fast-bowler Wasim Akram has said Mickey Arthur needs to stay in the country to look after the development of the game.

There have been widespread calls for a comprehensive overhaul of Pakistan cricket due to the string of poor performances in recent days. Last month, Pakistan failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup after suffering heavy defeat against India and Sri Lanka. In the ongoing World Cup too, they are on the verge of getting knocked out.

The Men in Green began their campaign with two wins before suffering four losses in a row. They lost against India, Australia, and Afghanistan before suffering a narrow 1-wicket loss against South Africa on Friday (October 27). The win has pretty much sealed their hopes of making it to the semifinal of an ODI World Cup for the first time since 2011.

Mickey Arthur needs to be in Pakistan: Wasim Akram

Following the loss against South Africa, Wasim Akram has said Mickey Arthur needs to stay in Pakistan if he wants to continue his association with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). In April this year, the PCB had roped in the former South Africa and Australia head coach as the team director in a part-time role. He is also plying his trade as the coach of Derbyshire.

Mickey Arthur has been coaching the Pakistani players via zoom call and never visited Pakistan during his current stint as director of cricket. Wasim Akram stated that Arthur needs to be in Pakistan to look after age-level cricket as well as domestic cricket.

“Mickey needs to be in Pakistan if he stays in PCB. He is not director cricket of Pakistan Cricket Team only. He is director cricket of every level cricket in Pakistan including U16, U19 and domestic,” Wasim Akram said.

Earlier, Wasim Akram had slammed Arthur for his bizarre comment after his loss to India. Speaking on A Sports, the legendary cricketer said: “What did you plan against Kuldeep Yadav? That’s what we want to hear, not this random stuff. You can’t get away from this.”
