Pakistan skipper Babar Azam showed his frustration towards Mohammad Nawaz following the left-arm spinner conceding a boundary to Keshav Maharaj in the 26th match of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, October 27.

The Pakistan team suffered their fourth consecutive match in the ongoing World Cup. The Babar Azam-led team set a target of 271 runs after opting to bat first. In response, the Proteas team successfully chased down the target with one wicket and 16 balls to spare.

Aiden Markram scored 91 runs, setting the foundation for the Proteas’ chase. Pakistan’s bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals, restricting South Africa to 260/9 in 45.3 overs. The Temba Bavuma-led team faced a challenging situation with two tailenders at the crease.

In a crucial moment, Babar Azam handed the ball to Mohammad Nawaz instead of Usama Mir when South Africa needed just five runs to win. Nawaz bowled a delivery down the leg side on the second ball, allowing Keshav Maharaj to hit it to the boundary at square leg.

After the match, Babar Azam expressed clear frustration with Nawaz’s bowling performance and had a direct conversation with him.

Everyone In The Camp Is Disappointed – Babar Azam

During the post-match presentation, Babar Azam noted that the team put up a good fight with both bat and ball but fell just short by 10-15 runs with the bat.

“We were very close but couldn’t finish it. Everyone in the camp is disappointed. We fought back really well but in batting, we were 10-15 runs short. This is part of the game, I think, if they give out, it would have been favor for us,” Babar said.

“Umpire’s call is part of the game. Yes, because we fought very well, at this point, we had the opportunity to win this match and stay in the tournament but it’s looking difficult for us now. We will try our best in the next three matches. Let’s see where we stand after those three matches.”
