England Captain Ben Stokes confirmed that Mark Wood is almost certain to play in Multan and believes that his pace is a massive asset.

England headed into the match with a 1-0 lead in the series after a remarkable 74-run victory in the final session on day five of the first Test at Rawalpindi.

Since suffering an elbow injury during the Caribbean tour in March, Wood is on track to receive his first Test cap. After enduring two surgeries, he missed the entirety of the English season. He later returned to international duty for England’s T20 World Cup victory in Australia, but a subsequent hip problem prevented him from playing in the semifinal and final games.

Wood left for England to heal from that injury there, but due to his limited bowling experience up to that time and his absence from the Test squad’s training camp in Abu Dhabi, he was not considered for the first Test. Even though his illness was unrelated to the virus plaguing the rest of the group, he too felt sick before the test.

Mark Wood definitely put his name into the hat for selection: Ben Stokes

Mark Wood stands out with his extreme pace, which he demonstrated during the World Cup by bowling the most deliveries (31) above 150kph (93mph) and recording the fastest delivery of the tournament at 154.74kph.

Stokes confirmed that his county teammate was fit and ready to go, and he welcomed the extra zip he would bring, particularly when it came to the short-ball tactic England used so effectively in the first Test.

“I mean it is definitely an added bonus, It’s a lot better having someone bowling 150kph bouncers rather than me, Ollie Robinson, and James Anderson at 80mph trying to do it. I think wherever you go in the world, conditions, whatever it is, having someone at Woody’s pace is an absolute bonus” Stokes said of Wood’s availability.

“Whether he’s bowling short or full, at that pace it’s always going to be difficult to face. It’s great to have him fit and recovering from his injuries and Mark Wood’s definitely put his name into the hat for selection” Ben Stokes Added.

Since becoming England’s full-time Test skipper, the 31-year-old has won seven out of eight matches.
