PAK vs NZ: Babar Azam Equals The Record For Most Number Of Wins As A Captain In T20Is Following The Victory Against New Zealand

The Pakistan National Cricket Team started the white-ball series against New Zealand on a high note by winning the first two matches. The Men in Green defeated New Zealand by 38 runs in the second T20I of the five-match series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Saturday, April 15.

Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat first in the second innings. The hosts put a mammoth total on the board, scoring 192 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs. The skipper Babar Azam smashed his third T20I century and scored an unbeaten 101 runs off 58 balls, including 11 fours and 3 sixes.

The wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam added a 99-run partnership for the first wicket before the mini-collapse. Rizwan scored 50 runs off 34 balls before being dismissed by Matt Henry. Iftikhar Ahmed scored 33 runs off 19 balls and added an unbeaten 87-run stand with his skipper for the fifth wicket.

Babar Azam Equals The Record For Most Number Of Wins As A Captain

Following the victory against New Zealand in the second match, Babar Azam became the most successful captain in the T20I format, equaling the record for the most number of wins as captain in the shorter format of the game. The 28-year-old guided the Men in Green to their 42nd win out of 68 matches under his leadership.

Former England captain Eoin Morgan and former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan are at the top of the list with 42 wins. Asghar Aghar took 52 matches to reach the foot, while Eoin Morgan needed 72 matches. The former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is next on the list with 41 wins, followed by Aaron Finch with 40 victories.

After the first innings, Babar broke the record for most centuries as a captain in the shortest format, surpassing Indian skipper Rohit Sharma’s tally. Overall, he has equalled the record for most T20I centuries with Glenn Maxwell, Colin Munro, and Suryakumar Yadav, while Rohit Sharma leads the list with four hundreds.

Babar Azam has the opportunity to become the most successful captain in T20I history with three more matches in the ongoing series against the Black Caps. The hosts will lock horns with the Kiwis in the third T20I at the same venue on Monday, April 17. Pakistan will host the remaining two matches in Rawalpindi.
