Former Pakistan opener, captain, and Team Director until a few months ago, Mohammad Hafeez has explained the real reason behind his decision to write "RIP Pakistan Domestic Cricket" on X recently.

Hafeez had taken to the social media platform and expressed his disagreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after they brought retired players like Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, and Usman Khan back into the team. The trio returned to the team all because of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in June.

It was not the first time that Mohammad Hafeez expressed his disagreement with the PCB as he has previously lashed out on the board for their uncanny decisions.

But his most recent one about the domestic circuit of the country raised a lot of eyebrows as people were baffled and confused as to why he wrote such a thing. But in a recent interview with a local Pakistani outlet, Hafeez stated that there were several reasons accounting for his Tweet.

What did Mohammad Hafeez say in his explanation of the "RIP Pakistan Domestic Cricket" Tweet

While speaking to Cricket Pakistan, Mohammad Hafeez started his explanation by shining light on two players who were brought back - Imad Wasim and Mohammad Amir. The former Team Director stated that both of them haven't played a single First-class or List A game in over 3-4 years and despite that, the PCB welcomed them back.

Wasim and Amir's performance in PSL 9 is the sole reason why the duo came back into the team and that, to some extent, is a slap to the hard work of uncapped players in the domestic scene.

"We have two players, Imad and Amir, who have not played domestic cricket for many years, they were brought back in the team. Amir hasn't played domestic cricket for 3-4 years, and he had taken retirement, however, he was also brought back." - Hafeez said via Cricket Pakistan outlet.

Mohammad Hafeez specifically targeted Imad Wasim, the same player who won man of the match awards for Islamabad United in all of the team's knock-out games in PSL 9, including the final.

Hafeez exposed the dual personality or hypocrisy of Wasim by revealing that during his time as the Director, he had asked the latter to return to the national team but back then on TV, the all-rounder had stated that he didn't want to.

Wasim reasoned that the previous management had not treated him well and that he now wanted to play in various leagues around the world instead of in Pakistan. Through the comments of Hafeez, he seemed perplexed with the U-turn that Imad Wasim took all of a sudden.

"Imad Wasim, who hasn't played domestic cricket and was sitting on TV, said that he didn't want to play cricket for Pakistan because when I talked to him. When I talked to him and told him that whatever has happened has happened, we will look after you going forward, you play for Pakistan, he said no, he wants to play leagues, but he was brought back." - Hafeez concluded.

Hafeez expresses worry about thousands of domestic cricketers

Lastly, Mohammad Hafeez expressed his worries about the thousands of domestic cricketers grinding it out day and night to play for Pakistan only to see retired players being brought back. "How will you motivate thousands of cricketers in the domestic circuit who work day and night and play domestic cricket when your selection criteria is not based on domestic cricket performance?" - Hafeez concluded.
