Former cricketer Umar Gul made a staggering revelation about Babar Azam’s captaincy after Pakistan’s loss to Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that when he was with the team he saw the skipper scolding senior players for talking to bowlers.
Babar Azam as captain has come under a lot of scrutiny after Pakistan suffered a 8-wicket thrashing at the hands of Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup 2023. The Men in Green are having a torrid time in the tournament as they have faced back-to-back defeats.
Pakistan thumped the Netherlands and Sri Lanka in their first two games of the tournament. But after that, nothing has gone their way. They suffered a thumping loss against India by 7 wickets and then faced another disappointing loss against Australia.
Pakistan displayed a poor performance against Afghanistan as they batted and bowled poorly in the game. With the bat, they managed just 282 runs with skipper Babar Azam being the top run-scorer with 74 runs knock. After that, they looked clueless with the ball.
They couldn’t take early wickets as Afghanistan batters capitalized on the good conditions. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (65) and Ibrahim Zadran (87) added 130 runs for the opening stand and made sure that their side got the platform to chase the target. After their staggering start, Rahmat Shah (77*) and Hashmatullah Shahidi (48*) batted well to take the team home.
After Pakistan’s humiliating loss, Umar Gul talked about Babar Azam’s poor captaincy. He said that other players don’t share their inputs because the captain once scolded Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan. Speaking to ARY Digital, he explained:
“I was with the Pakistan team for one series and I saw Mohammad Rizwan and Shadab Khan getting scolded by Babar Azam for talking to the bowler.
Maybe this is the reason why Rizwan and Shadab hesitate to give their inputs to the captain and bowler.”
Umar Gul says he was with team Pakistan for one series and noticed Shadab and Rizwan got told off by Babar for speaking to bowlers maybe that’s why you don’t see them advising or encouraging bowlers pic.twitter.com/OIWq0iPA0m

PAK vs SA: Not a single thing he has learnt over the period of time – Moin Khan on Babar Azam’s captaincy
Former Pakistan cricketer Moin Khan also lashed out at Babar Azam for his captaincy in the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that he has captained the team in the last few tournaments but hasn’t learned anything. He added that the skipper should have attacked Afghanistan by bringing fielders close. Speaking on A Sports, he explained:
“He is leading the side for the past four years. He has led the team in almost all the big events. Not a single thing he has learnt over the period of time. When you need to apply pressure, he is not doing anything. When you need wickets, you don’t see the close in fielders. You need to bring those strategies. We were playing against Afghanistan, he should have attacked by bringing the close-in fielders.”
Pakistan will be next seen in action when they take on South Africa on Friday (27th October).
