The 28-year-old Sri Lanka National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis was taken to hospital after smashing one of the best World Cup hundreds for his side in the eighth match of the ongoing edition of the marquee tournament.

Kusal Mendis played an absolutely stupendous knock against the Pakistan National Cricket Team at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad on Tuesday, October 10.

Coming to bat at No.3, he was involved in a 102-run partnership in just 95 balls with Pathum Nissanka and then a 111-run stand in just 69 balls with Sadeera Samarawickrama.

Kusal Mendis smashed his ton off 65 balls, which was the fastest for Sri Lanka in the history of the competition. He played attacking cricket and scored 122 runs off 77 balls, with 14 fours and 6 sixes, before getting out.

As the second innings of the match started and the Pakistan National Cricket Team batters came to bat, the Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis wasn’t seen on the ground.

Sadeera Samarawickrama walked out with the keeping gloves and he was seen playing the role of the wicket-keeper for Sri Lanka in the innings, which led to many believe that Kusal Mendis was rested.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), however, took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to inform that Mendis wasn’t rested, instead, he was taken to hospital.

SLC revealed that the batter suffered cramps upon returning from the field after his innings and he was taken to hospital. Dushan Hemantha replaced Mendis on the field and Samarawickrama was handed the wicket-keeping duties.

“Kusal Mendis was taken to the hospital after the player suffered cramps upon returning from the field after his brilliant knock of 122 runs from 77 balls in the ongoing game vs. Pakistan.

“Dushan Hemantha is on the field for Mendis, while Sadeera Samarawickrama has taken over the wicketkeeping duties in the absence of Mendis,” SLC said.

Earlier, winning the toss and batting first, the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team posted 344/9 on the board, thanks to brilliant performances from Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, and Pathum Nissanka.
