Ireland men's head coach Heinrich Malan has informed the players and support staff that he will step down from his role after more than four years in charge. The 45-year-old made the decision shortly after guiding Ireland to a historic 2-0 T20I series win over India.
Malan was appointed as Ireland's head coach in 2022, and his contract runs until early 2027. However, he believes this is the right time to step aside. His early departure will allow a new head coach to prepare the team during the ODI series against Afghanistan in August ahead of the 2027 World Cup Qualifiers.
It Has Been an Absolute Privilege - Heinrich Malan on His Time with Ireland
Heinrich Malan thanked the players, support staff, and the wider Irish cricket community as he reflected on his time as head coach. He also said his family enjoyed their years in Ireland and would always cherish the experience.
"It has been an absolute privilege to work with these players, staff and the wider Irish cricket community. My family and I have had a wonderful experience living here, and we will look back on our time involved in Irish cricket with great affection," Heinrich Malan said, as quoted by Cricket Ireland.
Malan took charge of the Ireland men's team in January 2022 after signing a three-year contract. Cricket Ireland extended his deal in 2024 following the team's progress under his leadership.
During his tenure, Ireland qualified for three consecutive T20 World Cups in 2022, 2024, and 2026. During the 2022 tournament in Melbourne, Ireland stunned eventual champions England with a memorable victory.
We Can Look Back with Great Pride - Heinrich Malan on Ireland's Biggest Achievements
Malan said that he was proud of the team's progress during his tenure and highlighted several historic victories. He credited the players and support staff for believing they could compete with the world's best teams.
"On the field, we can look back with great pride on our historic T20 World Cup victory against England in Melbourne, our first-ever Test victory against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, the first home Test win vs Zimbabwe in Belfast, the historic T20 series win at home vs India and beating Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa as well as direct qualifications for T20 World Cups through our consistent ability to challenge and beat the world's top teams," he added.
He Joined Us at a Challenging Period - Graeme West Thanks Heinrich Malan for his Contribution
Cricket Ireland's Director of High Performance, Graeme West, thanked Heinrich Malan for his contribution. He said that Malan played a key role in strengthening the Ireland men's team and developing the country's player pool.
"I have very much enjoyed working with Heinrich over the last two years and thank him for his outstanding contribution during that time. He joined us at a challenging period and has played a key role in progressing the Ireland Men's set-up — from World Cup qualifications to historic Test wins, and in developing the depth of our playing group," Graeme West said.
West also said discussions about the 2027 World Cup Qualifiers influenced the decision. He added that Malan believed stepping down now would give the next head coach enough time to prepare the team for the qualification campaign.
"Over recent months, we have been discussing the upcoming World Cup Qualifier cycle and what would best support the squad's preparation. In those conversations, Heinrich expressed a desire to step back at this point, which aligned with our focus on ensuring continuity heading into that campaign," West added.
