Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan discussed the underperformance of the top-order batsmen in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2023. Mohammad Rizwan highlighted the consistent performances of Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq.

The opening combination is a concern for the Pakistani team at the ODI World Cup. Fakhar Zaman continued his poor form, scoring 12 runs against the Netherlands in Hyderabad on Friday, October 6. Imam-ul-Haq managed to score 15 runs in Pakistan’s first game.

This Is An Opportunity For The Middle Order – Mohammad Rizwan

Speaking after an 81-run victory against the Netherlands, Mohammad Rizwan mentioned that Fakhar Zaman was named the ICC Player of the Month before the Asia Cup, and Imam-ul-Haq had been consistent with his centuries.

“Yes, it’s a good questio. But you also have to understand, the last two years, the reason for us becoming No. 1 was our top three. Just before the Asia Cup, Fakhar Zaman was named the ICC Player of the Month.”

“Before that, Imam had hundreds upon hundreds. We think this is an opportunity for the middle order to showcase its form. And now the middle order is also performing,” said Rizwan, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

The Men in Green lost three wickets for just 38 runs within the first power play, including skipper Babar Azam. However, Rizwan (68) and Saud Shakeel (68) rescued the team from the collapse, helping the team reach a competitive total of 286 runs in 49 overs.

We’re Not Only Dependent On The Top Three – Mohammad Rizwan

Reflecting on middle-order batters’ performances, Rizwan emphasized the importance of the entire team’s performance.

“The good sign for Pakistan is now we’re not only dependent on the top three, with contributions from the rest of the top seven coming too. I think proper teams don’t depend on one or two players. It’s much better when the whole team performs, so we’re happy with how it’s working out.”

The Pakistan bowlers successfully defended their target by bundling out the opposition for 205 runs in 41 overs. Haris Rauf emerged as the standout performer, claiming three wickets. Notably, all six bowlers managed to pick up at least one wicket during the match.
