Pakistan National Cricket Team captain Babar Azam and premier pacer Shaheen Afridi were left fuming over the fielding of vice-captain Shadab Khan during their Asia Cup 2023 clash against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.
The 5th match of the Asia Cup 2023 Super Four stage is being played between Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team and Babar Azam-led Pakistan National Cricket Team on Thursday, September 14 at the R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
Pakistan had a tough day at the office as there were catch drops, poor fielding, and overthrows as well. One of the overthrows came during the 37th over of the innings when Shaheen Afridi was bowling and Sri Lanka were inching closer to victory.
On the second ball of the 37th over, Shaheen Afridi bowled a back-of-a-length delivery on off-stump and Charith Asalanka cut it straight towards the point where Shadab Khan grabbed the ball, threw it at the stumps, and completely missed it.
No fielder was backing up the throw and Sri Lanka batters – Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka – were able to get two free runs. Looking at the throw the Pakistan captain Babar was left fuming and yelled at Shadab. Shaheen was also extremely upset with the overthrow.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first in the match. Opening the innings with Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman got out for 4. However, Shafique batted brilliantly alongside Babar Azam and added 64 runs in 70 balls. Dunith Wellalage was the man who broke the partnership between the Pakistan opener and the No.3 batter. The Men In Green quickly lost the next three wickets and were reduced to 130/5.
They looked in trouble when Mohammad Rizwan joined forces with Iftikhar Ahmed to build a great partnership. Together they played some blistering strokes and added 108 runs in just 78 balls, helping Babar Azam-led side post 252/7 on the board.
The wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan scored 86 runs off 73 balls, with 6 fours and 2 sixes, while Iftikhar Ahmed smashed 47 runs off 40 balls, with 4 fours and 2 sixes.
