Pakistan and Bangladesh have suffered yet another blow in their pursuit of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final as both of them have been docked crucial WTC points for slow over rates. They were found guilty of slow overrate during the recently concluded first Test of the ongoing two-match series.
Both teams locked horns against each other in Rawalpindi last week. The game ended on Sunday (August 25) with Bangladesh registering a historic first-ever Test win over Pakistan.
However, their joy has turned a bit sour while the hosts' miseries have been further compounded after they were found guilty of not being able to complete their quota of overs in the allotted time.
In a press release, the ICC confirmed that Pakistan were found to be six overs short during the Test and have lost six WTC points now. On the other hand, the Bangla Tigers were found to be three overs short and were docked three WTC points.
The home side was also fined 30% of the match fee while the visitors were penalised 15%. The captains of both teams pleaded guilty to the offenses and accepted the proposed sanctions. As a result, there was no need for formal hearings.
At present, Pakistan are languishing at the eighth spot in the WTC standings while Bangladesh have dropped one spot to the seventh after the sanction. India are currently at the top of the table and are followed by reigning WTC champions Australia.
Bangladesh's historic win over Pakistan:
The Bangla Tigers thrashed Pakistan by 10 wickets to register their first-ever Test victory over them.
The visitors came up with a stunning bowling display on the final day to turn the game on its head before going on to win it. The tourists bowled out the home side for just 146 runs on the final day after the latter started the day on 23 for 1.
Set a target of 30 runs, the visitors chased down the total in just over 6 overs without losing any wickets. Earlier in the game, the Shan Masood-led side declared its first innings for 448/6 with Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel scoring tons. In reply, Bangladesh scored 565 runs thanks to a brilliant 191-run knock from their former captain Mushfiqur Rahim.
