Pakistan is virtually eliminated from the semi-final race of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 after New Zealand annihilated Sri Lanka at Bengaluru on Thursday. The Kiwis have 10 points with a net run rate of +0.743 while Pakistan is sitting in fifth position with an NRR of +0.036. This means that Pakistan has to beat England by an unimaginably high margin in order to qualify for the semi-finals.

The equation for Pakistan’s qualification scenario is that they have to beat England by a margin of 287 runs if they are put to bat first. If they are batting second then they have to chase the target set by England in 2.4 overs which seems too far-fetched. However, Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir feels that Pakistan can pull it off.

Mohammad Amir said in a TV show that Pakistan can score 400-450 runs and restrict England to under 100. He showed faith in Fakhar Zaman’s form and believed in the uncertainty that Cricket has shown over the years. However, firstly scoring 400-450 runs against England is a tough challenge and to top it up, Pakistan will also have to restrict them to under 100 runs which is an entirely different challenge.

“Pakistan can score 400-450 runs and restrict England to under 100. This is a possibility in case Fakhar Zaman gets going the same way he did against New Zealand. You never know in cricket and I’m serious about it,” said Mohammad Amir.

Pakistan’s Chances For A Semi-Final Spot Is Extremely Meek

Pakistan’s World Cup performance graph showed initial growth when they won two back-to-back matches against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka respectively but after that, they lost four consecutive matches against India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa. They again came back with two consecutive wins against Bangladesh and New Zealand and they still have a chance but the chances are very meek.

The Men In Green will have to extract every ounce of their blood and sweat and find the energy to somehow produce a miracle of a performance against defending champions England. Meanwhile, New Zealand is sitting in the number four position and they might be preparing for the semi-finals against India.
