Pakistan legend reveals Sunil Gavaskar's role in Pakistan's 1992 World Cup victory

July 10 marked the 75 birthday of former Indian skipper and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar. Before Sachin Tendulkar, he was the original "Little Master" of Indian cricket and he was the first to score 10000 Test runs for India.

He played international cricket for nearly 15 years and played some of his best knocks against West Indies and Pakistan. With Gavaskar turning 75 on Wednesday, former Pakistan cricketers Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, Mushtaq Muhammad, Sadiq Muhammad, Shoaib Muhammad, Mohsin Khan and Iqbal Qasim extended their best wishes to him.

"Now that you have completed 75 pray, you carry on your magnificent innings in life," "Like his batting, his insight into the game is invaluable. He was the original batting don of Indian cricket. I learnt a lot from just watching him bat up close,” Zaheer Abbas told PTI.

Former Pakistan skipper Javed Miandad mentioned how Gavaskar inspired Pakistan's 1992 World Cup-winning team.

"I remember in 1992 during the World Cup his words of encouragement for the Pakistan team boosted us. His was the most valuable wicket for us whenever we played against each other. His was a prized wicket. I wish him all the best on his birthday," Miandad said.

Another former skipper Mushtaq Mohammad that Gavaskar and the late Bishan Singh Bedi were the pillars of Indian cricket in the 70s.

"Whether we played against him in Karachi or in Mumbai or in Sharjah when he batted he was like a wall. He played a big role in the evolution of cricket in Sharjah. Wish him the best,” he added.

Gavaskar was one of the first batters in the 70s and the 80s to not play without a helmet and take on the Great West Indian, Australian and Pakistani bowlers.

The former Indian skipper was also one of the first players to play over 100 Test matches. He played 125 Test matches scoring 10122 runs averaging 51.12. He hit 764 fours and just 14 sixes in his Test career.

Gavaskar has had a long career doing broadcasting as well. He has seen a few generations of Indian cricketers now flourish big on the international stage. From Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli to Shubman Gill to Yashasvi Jaiswal, Gavaskar has seen them grow into big names.

He has had an eventful career in broadcasting as he has got into a few controversies as well. A few of those have been linked to Virat Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma. Meanwhile, he has recently commented on the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and has finally seen the modern Indian team win an ICC title.
