Former Pakistan National Cricket Team captain and head coach, Younis Khan has reacted strongly to the reports of fines imposed on the players by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their poor performance in the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The winner of the 2009 edition yet again failed to qualify for the semifinal as their journey ended in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 round, crashing out of the tournament after a better net run rate took New Zealand to the top four. The Kiwis eventually lost the trophy to India in Ahmedabad.
Younis Khan reacts strongly to fine reports after poor T20 World Cup 2026 campaign
Following the poor campaign, several media reports claimed that the PCB headed by Mohsin Naqvi punished the Pakistan players with heavy fines for their disappointing display. This move shocked many. Although PCB has not officially confirmed the punishment, it has neither denied the reports.

Reacting to the controversial decision, Younis Khan has urged the current Pakistan players to show courage and challenge the decision if the punishment is real. He reminded everyone that a similar situation had happened years ago, and at that time, players stood together against the PCB's decision, which forced the board to step back.
Younis Khan asks players to unite and challenge the decision
Younis Khan told reporters in Pakistan, as quoted by the Hindustan Times: “Is it confirmed? If it's confirmed, then it's not right. Earlier, an instance like that happened. In 2003, when we returned after the World Cup, Rashid Latif was made the captain.
He received a message from the PCB that the match fees would be reduced to half, and the same would be done with the allowance. 1-2 players had taken a stand against this. The players now have to take a stand. If the players took a stand, then they wouldn't be fined.”

Meanwhile, former captain Rashid Latif also backed Younis. He suggested that such fines do not solve problems and only create more confusion in Pakistan cricket.

Latif said, “Weak boards take such decisions of fining players. All the things are mentioned in the central contracts. This is just some theory floated in the media for you guys to enjoy. Nothing will happen.”
PKR 5 million fine shocks Pakistan squad after semifinal exit
According to several media reports, every player in the T20 World Cup squad was asked to pay a huge fine of around PKR 5 million after the team failed to reach the semi-finals. The decision reportedly came after Pakistan’s defeat against India in Colombo.
The fine would have been cancelled if they had managed to reach the semifinals. The team suffered a heavy defeat of 65 runs against Sri Lanka in Pallekele, which ended their hopes.
They had suffered heavy defeat against England in the Super 8 stage, and the New Zealand match was washed out, which didn’t help them in the semifinal qualification. They are currently preparing to face Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series, starting on March 11.
