Pakistan has decided to boycott their T20 World Cup 2026 group match on February 15 against India, which is scheduled to be played in Colombo. Forfeiting a match will simply result in the loss of 2 crucial points. If they give up 2 points, can Pakistan qualify for the next round of the tournament?
On Sunday, through a social media post, Pakistan informed about the Government of Pakistan's stance against their high-octane match with India. The Pakistan government suggested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) boycott the match.
Pakistan to boycott India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup 2026 match
"The Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan grants approval to the Pakistan Cricket Team to participate in the ICC World T20 2026. However, the Pakistan Cricket Team shall not take the field in the match scheduled on 15th February 2026 against India," the Government of Pakistan wrote this on their 'X' post.
According to the official statement of the government, the Pakistan National Team will take part in the tournament but not take the field against India in February. Which means gifting 2 points straightaway to India. The loss of 2 points can prove fatal for the team in the future.
Probable effect on Pakistan after boycotting the India match
Along with Pakistan, they are scheduled to face the Netherlands and the USA before the India match and then another match with Namibia on February 18. According to the current scenario, if Pakistan is unable to pull off wins against the USA, Namibia, and the Netherlands, then their T20 World Cup 2026 run can be cut short immediately; even crashing out from the title race is possible because of lack of points. If Pakistan wants to move into the next round, then they have to win the remaining three group matches.
In the past, the Pakistan cricket team took a jolt against the USA cricket team. The USA famously defeated Pakistan in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and went on to qualify for the next round as the second-placed team in their group. And the Netherlands has a history of pulling out some great wins against some top cricketing nations. So, it is needless to say that boycotting the India match will simply put Pakistan in a lot more difficult situation in the tournament.
Why the Government of Pakistan took the decision?
The Pakistani government takes the boycott stance in the protest against the ICC for ejecting Bangladesh from the competition. Bangladesh refused to travel to India to play their T20 World Cup 2026 matches. Instead of playing in India, they demanded to play in Sri Lanka, citing safety and security concerns. ICC did not approve Bangladesh's request and gave them a 24-hour ultimatum. Bangladesh also remained firm on the decision.
As a result, ICC replaced the Bangladesh cricket team with Scotland. After which, Pakistan changed their position and ultimately decided not to play against India in Colombo on February 15.
