Parthiv Patel and Sanjay Bangar got into a heated exchange in the Star Sports commentary box over India’s batting order in the ongoing fifth and final Test against England at The Oval.
The reason was Washington Sundar, who was sent to bat at No. 9 in the second innings despite scoring a brilliant century at No. 5 and helped India to draw the Manchester Test against England.
Parthiv Patel and Sanjay Bangar clash over India’s batting order at The Oval
Sanjay Bangar questioned the logic behind the decision, pointing out how strange it must feel for Washington Sundar to drop down the batting order after such an impressive performance. However, Parthiv Patel quickly jumped in and defended the call by saying it was a left-right combination at play.

Things escalated when Bangar reminded Parthiv Patel that he is no longer a coach, as he is currently just a broadcaster, when the latter said, “Left-right combination, match up, come on, coach.”
Bangar said on Star Sports, “I am not the coach right now; I am a broadcaster. In the dual role that you are doing, you are coaching as well as broadcasting. He should answer this himself. Will you see match-ups in Test cricket as well? On such a level where the game is not moving.”
Gautam Gambhir’s name gets pulled into the heated live debate
That’s when Gautam Gambhir’s name was unexpectedly dragged into the conversation, with Parthiv pointing out that the current Indian head coach is from the current generation, and his answer came from the mindset of modern-day coaches.
Parthiv Patel fired back by saying, “Of course we will see. It is important, the way the game is swinging and seeming. It becomes difficult for a bowler. If there is a lefty batter, he should keep putting the ball in the same place. That's why you raised the question as a broadcaster.
That's why I answered it as a current coach. That this thought will be behind. How do the coaches of this generation think? This is Gautam Gambhir's first year as a coach. He is the coach of our age. Of this generation.”

However, Bangar still argued that the call to promote Dhruv Jurel ahead of Washington Sundar was based on experience, the faith of the team management, and the role each player has earned. He explained that Jurel has batted up the order in the past, and that’s why he was sent ahead of Sundar.
In the end, Parthiv Patel sarcastically acknowledged Bangar’s explanation but stood by his original point by saying, “You explained it very well as an experienced coach. And I think it is because of the lefty-righty combination.”
Notably, Sundar was sent at No. 8 in the first innings, and he could manage only 26 runs off 55 balls, while Jurel made 19 at No. 7. In the second innings, Sundar scored 53 runs off 46 balls despite coming at number 9, while Jure made 34 runs at No. 7 in the ongoing final Test against England at The Oval.
As Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the final Test, Jurel was picked as a wicketkeeper-batter for the crucial final Test against England at The Oval.
