A few months ago, Langer was involved in a tussle with the Australian players where senior players like Cummins had submitted their feedback regarding the former Australian opener’s coaching style.
Justin Langer’s contract is up for renewal in a few months: Pat Cummins after thr MCG Test
Langer, whose contract expires in mid-2022, was under immense pressure to keep his position until the Ashes but as players themselves have admitted that there was a massive change in Langer’s management as Australia lifted their maiden T20 World Cup title last year.
The Aussies doubled their joy by retaining the Ashes as they beat England by an innings and 14 at MCG to sweep the series 3-0 with two more games yet to be played in the series.
Just after Australia retained the Ashes, Cummins was asked about Langer’s contract extension, to which the Australian Test skipper didn’t had an explicit response.
“I think we’ll savor this victory today and continue the Ashes,” Cummins said when asked about Langer’s future.
“I don’t think today is the day to speculate on that. We’ll all sit down together after this series or whenever his tenure is up. His contract is up for renewal in a few months and we’ll deal with that then,” he further added.
But Cummins had a different approach about the same question after he claimed 4/45 against England on Friday to help his side hold a first-innings lead of 115 runs in the ongoing Hobart Test.
It’d be nice to have clarity for everyone: Pat Cummins on Justin Langer’s contract
Cummins was keen to know about Langer’s contract and said that everyone in the team loves the head coach.
“That’s above my pay grade. We’ll wait and see, it’d be nice to have clarity for everyone. “But he’s been doing a fantastic job, we absolutely love JL,” Cummins said.
“He’s been really great through the World Cup and the Ashes. Honestly, it’s not been a talking point at all within the camp.
“The plan has always been to chat about it after the Ashes, so the powers that be, I’m sure, will chat at some stage. But he’s been fantastic for us and the boys love having him around,” Cummins added.
It is learned that the decision regarding Langer’s contract with the Australian team would be decided after the conclusion of the Ashes.
