‘Pata tha ladka kitna paani mein hai’ - Suryakumar Yadav’s blunt statement on Shivam Dube

Suryakumar Yadav trusted Shivam Dube to open the bowling in the Asia Cup 2025 final and has kept his faith in the all-rounder. He might be backed over Nitish Kumar Reddy for the T20I series against Australia, especially in Hardik Pandya's absence.
India have missed the services of their seasoned all-rounder Hardik Pandya at times, and Shivam Dube has stepped up on several occasions for India. From the Asia Cup 2025, he has also stepped forward with the ball in his hand and picked wickets at regular intervals.
Hardik Pandya was ruled out due to injury from the Australia series, while Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy would be paired as the all-rounders in their 5-match series against Australia.
Shivam Dube bowled a splendid spell in the Asia Cup Final
During the high-voltage Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav handed the new ball to Shivam Dube, who was a bowling all-rounder for India. Dube had already bowled 10 overs in the previous 5 matches.
Hardik Pandya bowled with the new ball, as he missed the finale due to a quadriceps injury, and hence the non-regular bowler was asked to spearhead the attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah. To Dube's credit, he did a decent enough job, though he could not pick a wicket. He bowled three overs and gave away 23 runs, while Pakistan were bowled out for 146.
"I absolutely don’t put any pressure," Suryakumar Yadav said on his role as the Indian T20I skipper
Suryakumar Yadav said that he knew how hard Dube worked on his bowling and looked very confident to get the job done for India after he opened the bowling for India for the first time.
“No, no, I don’t put pressure on anyone. You’re talking about expectations – I absolutely don’t put any pressure. Everyone has their own preparation; they know the conditions here, how they need to bowl."
"But he’s (Dube) been working really hard on his bowling. And because of that, he showed such confidence that I made him bowl in the Asia Cup final. I knew – I’ve been playing with him for seven-eight years – Mujhe pata tha ladka kitna paani mein hai, I know how capable he is. I saw that his preparation was really good," India captain Suryakumar told reporters ahead of the 1st T20I against Australia in Canberra.
Shivam Dube might be handed the upper hand in Australia
Suryakumar said he won’t hesitate to deploy Dube in a similar role even against a quality side like Australia. This has given Dube the upper hand over the other all-rounder in the side, Nitish Kumar Reddy.
“If your preparation is solid, if you’ve practiced well and there’s no doubt in your mind, then I think you’re very clear with your plans. And he is very clear with his plans. If he gets another opportunity tomorrow, why not? It’s a good team, and when you bowl well against a good team, it boosts your confidence even more," he said.
