Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have provided a massive update on Matheesha Pathirana's injury ahead of the match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Chennai Super Kings confirmed that Matheesha Pathirana will return to his home country for further recovery from injury.

Matheesha Pathirana last played for the Chennai Super Kings against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) at their home ground on April 28. The right-arm pacer missed the match against the Punjab Kings due to a niggle. He also failed to make it into the playing XI for an away match against the Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.

Matheesha Pathirana Will Be Returning To Sri Lanka - Chennai Super Kings

On Sunday, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) released an official statement on Matheesha Pathirana returning home. According to the statement, Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery.

"Chennai Super Kings pacer Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a hamstring injury and will be returning to Sri Lanka for further recovery.  Chennai Super Kings wishes Pathirana a quick recovery,” the statement read.

Pathirana's absence proved to be a significant setback for CSK in the previous game, as the team suffered a loss to the Punjab Kings at Chepauk. The Sri Lankan pacer has been a standout bowler for CSK throughout the tournament, securing 13 wickets in six games at an economy rate of 7.68.

The young bowler is the second-highest wicket-taker for the Super Kings, trailing Mustafizur Rahman, who has taken 14 wickets. The Ruturaj Gaikad-led team is also without Mustafizur Rahman. His NOC for the tournament was until May 1, and he returned to Bangladesh ahead of the World Cup.

Punjab Kings Opt To Field First After Winning Toss

CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad lost 10 tosses out of 11 in the ongoing tournament. Sam Curran opted for bowling first after winning the toss. The home team fielded the same lineup from the previous matches, while Mitchell Santner replaced Mustafizur Rahman in the Chennai lineup for the match.

Chennai suffered a seven-wicket defeat against the Punjab Kings in their recent match at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 62 runs off 48 balls, comprising five fours and two sixes, as CSK posted 162 runs. Punjab successfully chased down the 163-run target with 13 balls to spare.
